Errors be gone!

I couldn't wait to boot Final Fantasy XIV and return to the magical world of Hydaelyn, but a pesky error prevented me from jumping into the game. If you've experienced the same problem, here's how to fix the ''Unable to complete version check'' error in FFXIV.

Ways to fix Unable to complete version check error in Final Fantasy XIV

These are tried and true ways of fixing the above-mentioned error in Final Fantasy XIV. If the first method you try doesn't work, using them in tandem with others should resolve the issue.

Check server status

Before trying to fix the error by yourself, visit the Final Fantasy XIV News page and check whether the servers are down due to maintenance, updates, or technical difficulties. If the servers are online, but you still keep getting the ''Unable to complete version check'' error, proceed to the next method.

Verify integrity of game files

A tried-and-true way of fixing error in Steam games, verifying game file integrity works more often than you might think. To perform it, follow these three steps:

  1. Open Steam and go to your game library.
  2. Right-click on Final Fantasy XIV Online and then select Properties.
  3. Click the Local Files tab and click Verify Integrity of Game Files.

Restart your router and PC

The one thing PCs and routers have in common is that they tend to cause issues after staying on for too long. Turn your router off or, preferably, unplug it to perform a complete power cycle, wait a few minutes, plug it back in, and turn it back on. Repeat the process for your PC and open the game to check whether the error persists.

Change network or use VPN

If your native connection is causing errors, try connecting via a VPN program or connect your PC to the router via the ethernet port. That way, you'll get the most out of your internet connection and you can bypass any wi-fi connectivity issues, while the VPN software can let you connect to otherwise inaccessible servers while your preferred server is down.

Change boot configuration file

If the previous methods didn't work, it's time to roll up some sleeves. The boot configuration file can cause issues in games after some time, and you'll need to manually edit the file settings to make FFXIV work as intended. Here's how to do it:

  1. Find the ffxiv_boot.cfg file and open it using Notepad.
  2. Find Boot Version Check Mode and switch from 0 to 1.
  3. Save the file and close it.

Reinstall FFXIV

If all else fails, go for the old reliable ''uninstall and then install again'' method and see how the game fares afterwards. Try changing the install directory since games can behave differently depending on what partition they're in.
