According to the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), Fortnite is Rated T for Teens. For every game with that rating, it's recommended that the persons playing the game be at least age 13 or older. As for European players, Pan European Game Information (PEGI) rates Fortnite PEGI 12, which means that the game's content is suitable for players around the ages of 12 and older. These agencies are independent ratings boards, however, and not government bodies, which makes them similar to the American Motion Picture Association (MPA) for movies.

In order to participate in the official Fortnite tournaments, you have to be at least 13 years old or older. Apart from that, you will need a permit from your parent or legal guardian until you are 17 years old.
Even though Fortnite is colorful and vibrant, this does not necessarily mean it is meant to be played by a very young audience. Fortnite is an incredibly popular game, and there will be players who are younger than the Age Rating in your region. While this is true, the aforementioned agencies have concluded that the content is appropriate only for those around the ages of 12 and 13 or older.
