How to get the chests covered by sand in The Barrens in God of War Ragnarök

When you first encounter the buried chests in God of War Ragnarök, you will not be able to interact with them or open them. Instead, you must first complete the Secrets of the Sand Favor. This requires you to descend into The Below and seek out the pained creature that Atreus hears in Alfheim.
