Performance improvements roll out for Gray Zone Warfare, more on the way

Gray Zone Warfare's recent release into Early Access has received widespread criticism of the game's overall performance. Thankfully, developer Madfinger Games has begun its crusade to squash these issues as they come up.

Users on the game's official Steam discussion board are especially livid with the game's various problems, with user LoboDoMar stating, "I can barely get 30 FPS, and the game hangs 20 seconds every time I move in the scenery." He has a RTX 3080 TI with a I7-4770k @ 3.5Ghz and 32GB RAM, which is way above Gray Zone Warfare's minimal recommendation. Comments like this are commonplace on the game's official Discord and Steam discussion forums, and as someone with a system with slightly higher specs than this, I can attest to having similar issues while playing.

Madfinger Games is not planning to let things go as they are, as the company has already officially released a hotfix in an attempt to counteract the ongoing performance issues. Though minor in scope, Hotfix 1 has made a few changes to how FSR functions for graphic cards lacking DLSS Frame generation support. Additionally, it states that it has "improved antialiasing quality for FSR, focusing on boosting performance."

While many players have expressed gratitude for the FSR hotfix, some are expressing the opposite, with the hotfix making their performance situation worse. On the Gray Zone Warfare official Discord server, user NaturalBornSina says he has "dropped from 130 (Frames Per Second) to like 90 FPS" following the FSR hotfix update. Another user, "I.Vee" on Discord says he "started crashing on FSR, but the FPS is much better" when compared to DLSS following the FSR hotfix.

According to Madfinger Games' pinned tweet on X (formally known as Twitter), Hotfix 1 is one of many as the game continues to update toward a 1.0 release. They have mentioned they are well aware of the performance issues plaguing the game and future fixes will come as development continues. While there has been no other official word as to when these performance fixes will come, I suspect they will arrive sooner rather than later, though over an extended period rather than all at once.

Gray Zone Warfare's situation is not uncommon in today's video game climate. Despite developmental tools being more sophisticated and saturated than ever, performance issues plague the industry at all levels, though indie titles tend to be less common for them. Nevertheless, Gray Zone Warfare is not barred from this seemingly new standard, and Madfinger Games will need to work hard to turn the title's 'Mixed' rating on Steam (largely due to performance issues) into something more positive in the future.
