Whether you're on Xbox, PlayStation, or PC, you can play with friends on any platform. To do this, you'll have to open up the social panel and then add your friend's game tag. From there, you just invite them to your game, and you're all set!
Even though the different platforms have different ways of playing online, the game circumvents that by going through your We Were Here Expeditions friends list. Many games work similar to this, such as Fortnite, so it shouldn't feel too different than that.

How to claim the We Were Here Expeditions The Friendship free trial
On Steam, just head over to the official store page and claim it before October 13 to grab it for free. It's different on Xbox as the game's price is $3.99, but a free trial is available. Xbox players have to go to the game's store page and, instead of buying it, select the free trial instead. You'll get access until October 13 if you go down that route.
For PlayStation, you can go to the game's store page and add it to your library to play for free. With full crossplay between the three platforms, it doesn't hurt to download it and try it out for yourself.
