What is Metal Gear Solid Integral?

Who wants to play MGS with an op weapon?

If you bought the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1, you might notice a version of Metal Gear Solid called Integral. This is actually a very special version of the game that features some crazy extras, including a weapon with unlimited ammo and a difficulty setting that moves around NPCs.

Metal Gear Solid Integral, explained

When Metal Gear Solid was first released in 1998, some special modifications were made to the European and North American versions of the game. Therefore, Japan missed out on some of the newer features that improved the experience (for example, multiple difficulty settings). Metal Gear Solid Integral is basically a revamp of the base game with these changes for the Japanese audience with a couple of other perks that drastically improve the game experience.

The changes that came with Metal Gear Solid Integral are as follows:

  • Voice acting in either Japanese or English
  • 300+ VR Missions
  • Multiple difficulty settings
  • New "very easy" setting gives Snake a silenced MP5 with unlimited ammo
  • New version of the game where the guards have swapped places
  • New Codec frequency, which gives comments from the developers on the game
  • New Codec frequency where Snake can listen to different tracks

For newcomers who get the Master Collection Vol. 1, I would definitely recommend playing Integral. The MP5 with unlimited ammo certainly comes in handy. In regular difficulties, conserving ammo can be a huge pain, so it's nice to play the game without having to worry about it. Series veterans can also have fun with the new version with swapped guards, but they need a save file with MGS already beaten before unlocking this mode.
