How to make a Book and Quill in Minecraft

The Book and Quill is a fun item that allows you to create a book that you can write into and save to leave behind for your friends or just to log certain things away. Creating them is a bit more difficult than a regular book, but without step-by-step tutorial we'll show you exactly how to make a Book and Quill in Minecraft!

How to make a Book and Quill

To make a Book and Quill in Minecraft, we're going to need paper and leather to create the book. After that, we're going to need to locate an Ink Sac and Feather to turn it into the final product. All of these items require us to find some specific plants or animals, so we'll be doing some exploring around the map!

Step 1: Find the Ingredients for Paper

Paper is a bit tricky to make because we're going to need Sugar Cane. This spawns near water, so you might need to go search for it a bit. Here's an example of what it looks like:

When you find some, make sure to punch it at the bottom because it will fully break and you can collect it quicker. I recommend planting some of this near some water at your base because it grows relatively quickly and you'll have a supply of it always available!

Step 2: Create Paper

Once you've got some Sugar Cane, you can make pieces of paper. You'll need three cane for each piece of paper. We'll need three pieces of paper for each book, so three Sugar Cane will be enough for a single book! Here's the recipe for paper:

You can also find paper in chests, which can be found in Shipwrecks, Strongholds, and Villages. This obviously isn't going to be a steady supply, so you're always better off creating an area to plant Sugar Cane!

Step 3: Find Leather

Leather isn't too hard to find, but you'll need to locate certain animals to get it. What you need to find are cows, mooshrooms, horses, donkeys, mules, llamas, or hoglins. When you kill one of these, you have a chance to get 0 - 2 leather per animal. Alternatively, if you find yourself some rabbits, you can turn four rabbit hide into one leather.

If you can find cows, I'd recommend starting a farm by fencing them in and breeding them. You can then kill some for the leather you require. If you have an enchanted weapon with Looting, the amount of leather increases by each level! We need one piece of leather for each book we're going to create.

Step 4: Create the Book

Now that we have paper and leather we can put them together! Since it's only four ingredients you can do this in your inventory or a Crafting Table. Here's the recipes to create a book:

Step 5: Find Chickens or Parrots for Feathers

We now need to get a feather, which can be obtained by killing chickens or parrots. Chickens are going to usually be the easiest to find because they randomly spawn on grassy biomes. I would recommend gathering some seeds from breaking grass or harvesting wheat crops. You can use these to get chickens to follow you! Bring them back to your base and create a fenced in area for them so you can breed them. This way you can have as many feathers as you could ever want!

Parrots can only be found in jungle biomes, but they are a pretty rare spawn. They come in a variety of colors and can be tamed by feeding them seeds. Unfortunately, you can't breed parrots currently, which makes chickens the best option for farming.

You can also find feathers in chests in Shipwrecks and in Villages. So, if you only want to make a couple of Book and Quills then you won't need to hunt down animals.

Step 6: Find Squid for an Ink Sac

Squid spawn in small groups in water based biomes like river, ocean, and their variants. They are quite common, and you should find them if you follow the various rivers of your seed, or you paddle/swim around the ocean a bit. When you kill one of these they have the possibility of dropping 1 - 3 Ink Sacs. We need at least one, but if you want to create more then you should get as many as you need!

Step 6: Create the Book and Quill

We have finally gathered all of the necessary parts to make our Book and Quill! Now, just place the book, feather, and Ink Sac and place it into a your inventory crafting area or a Crafting Table.

Using the Book and Quill

The Book and Quill is an interesting item because you can write in it as a journal of sorts or even take notes. You can also write something in it, sign the book, and it will be turned into a written book. Once this occurs, the book can no longer be edited. So, if you wanted to leave some information behind for another player, then utilizing this is a good method. It's also a nice way to add some lore into your story or role-play! There's a whole lot of things you can do with this item that will enrich your next playthrough.
