NieR: Automata is held as a masterpiece among many games for its unique storytelling approach and gorgeous design. It ultimately helped push JRPGs into the mainstream. It was recently announced by Aniplex that the game is receiving an anime adaptation (details via the NieR: Automata anime website).
The anime will likely follow the events of the game. The show will likely jump between 2B and 9S to show both sides of their story before finally switching off to A2 to wrap things up. Square Enix games haven't previously had full anime adaptations, so the content of the anime is pretty much up to speculation at this point.

Many of the anime that are based on games like Tales of Zestiria the X follow the core story, with minor changes that add to the lore. Square Enix has already shown that it's willing to expand on certain Final Fantasy stories, like Final Fantasy XV, using anime. It wouldn't be too surprising to see additional information about the characters added in.
You can watch the official trailer below, which was uploaded to the Aniplex YouTube account. Please keep in mind that this is a Japanese YouTube channel, so there aren't any English translations.
