All Water Type Pokémon Weaknesses and Counters

Thunderbolt and Energy Ball your way through!

Water Type Pokémon are some of the strongest Types in the game due to them only having two weaknesses and four resistances. Offensively, very few Pokémon resist the damage of Water Type moves, making it easy to spam their Water STAB. They deal super effective damage to three Types and are a great option for Terastallization as well. To better deal with them, these are all Water Type Pokémon's weaknesses and the best Pokémon that counter them.

What is Water weak to in Pokémon?

Water Type Pokémon have two weaknesses, making them naturally defensive in nature. Water Type Pokémon will take super effective damage from:

  • Grass - 2x
  • Electric - 2x

Both Grass and Electric moves can be learned by a lot of Pokémon and Water Type Pokémon can also be damaged by the Ice Type move Freeze Dry.

What is Water strong against in Pokémon?

Water Type Pokémon are very strong offensively due to only three Types resisting Water Type attacks. This makes it easy for Water Type Pokémon to just use their strongest STAB move as it isn't likely to hit a Pokémon for reduced damage. Water Type moves deal super effective damage against:

  • Fire - 2x
  • Ground - 2x
  • Rock - 2x

Ground Type Pokémon have their own set of strengths and weaknesses but are considered very strong offensively. Water Pokémon completely counter most Ground Type Pokémon because so few of them actually have any moves to deal super effective damage to Water Types.

What are the best counters to Water Types in Pokémon?

There are a lot of strong Water Type Pokémon that are hard to deal with like Azumarill and Dondonzo that can be countered with the right moves or Pokémon. When facing Water Type Pokémon, players should have Pokémon that will take reduced damage from their STAB. These Types all resist Water Type moves:

  • Dragon - 1/2
  • Grass - 1/2
  • Water - 1/2

Water Type Pokémon tend to learn Ice Type moves as well, giving them a way to deal super effective damage to both Dragon and Ice Type Pokémon. Pokémon with Water Absorb or Storm Drain like Quagsire and Gastrodon deal with Water Type Pokémon very well because of their Water/Ground Typing.
