What are Tera Shards for in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet?

Experiment with different types!

Fans of the long-running Pokémon franchise know that in every installment comes a new wave of abilities and functions for players to take advantage of. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, this comes as a new feature called Terastallization which gives Pokémon the ability to transform into crystallized versions of themselves with more powerful moves. These moves are determined by Tera Type, which can be any of the 18 types you can encounter throughout the game. However, when you capture a wild Pokémon, their Tera Type will automatically line up with whatever type that Pokémon is.

Where to get Tera shards in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Tera Shards are a randomized drop that can be acquired after fighting a Tera Pokémon either by yourself or with your friends. After defeating the Pokémon, their Tera Jewel will shatter, thus breaking into a Tera Shard for you to take. The most reliable way to find Tera Pokémon is to search your map for Tera Raids with the Tera Type that you are looking for. In some cases, other characters will give Tera Shards out for completing a variety of tasks. Once you've acquired 50 Tera Shards, you can exchange them with the chef at Treasure Eatery in the town of Medali to change your Pokémon's Tera Type.
