It may not compare to some of the other Generation VI threats in the main series, but Barbaracle can be a serious threat in Pokémon GO, specifically in the Great League. The key word here is "can," though, because Barbaracle needs to run a specific moveset to really be effective. However, running Barbaracle with this moveset can be a nice way to catch opponents off guard.
Which moves should Barbaracle be running in Pokemon GO?
Despite not getting a STAB boost, Fury Cutter is the most optimal fast move that Barbaracle can run. It only charges four energy per use, but the move has a half-second cooldown. That means eight energy per second, which is great for stacking up energy.
Barbaracle's bread and butter charge move is Cross Chop. The move only needs 35 energy to use. This means, with good use of Fury Cutter, Barbaracle can often overcharge this move. It's not like Barbaracle is frail, either; it has 206 base Defense. This is important because it allows Barbaracle to stay in and take more hits so that it can farm that extra energy and use more Cross Chops per match.
There is a bit of debate over what the other charge move on Barbaracle should be; Grass Knot hits more targets, but Stone Edge hits harder while benefiting from STAB.
Despite the power that comes from Stone Edge, though, trainers should be running Grass Knot on Barbaracle. In Great League, there are practically zero big threats that Stone Edge hits. On the other hand, Swampert, Jellicent, Azumarill, Quagsire, Lanturn, Whiscash, and Walrein are just some of the many threats that get crushed by Grass Knot. This move simply has too much utility to pass up.
