In the opening minutes of the game, players are given a chance to choose from three starter Pokémon, that will more than likely accompany players throughout the entirety of their journey. These starter Pokémon are Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. Each of these Pokémon will evolve two times at set levels before reaching their final forms.

Turtwig

The tortoise Pokémon, Turtwig, is the grass-type starter in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Turtwig will evolve into a Grotle at level 18. That Grotle will then reach its final evolution, Torterra, at level 34. While it's the last of the starters to reach its first evolution, it is the first starter to reach its final evolution. The table below breaks down the evolutions and their types.

Chimchar

The monkey Pokémon, Chimchar, is Gen IV's fire-type starter. It has the fastest first evolution, morphing into a Monferno at just level 14. Then, the Monferno will evolve again, this time into an Infernape at level 36. Also, this Pokémon is the only one out of the three starters to have a second evolution that is a dual-type. The table below breaks down the evolutions and types.

Piplup

The penguin Pokémon, Piplup, is Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's Water-type starter. It sits right in the middle of the other two starters, evolving into its first evolution, Prinplup, at level 16. Prinplup later evolves into Empoleon, at level 36. This Pokémon is a good choice if you want to spend as much time with each evolution as possible. The table below breaks down the evolutions and types.
