After years of waiting, the Monkey Island series of adventure games is set to receive a new installment with Return to Monkey Island. Announced initially on April 4, it was officially unveiled as part of Nintendo Direct in June 2022. Read below to see all the details we've rounded up about Return to Monkey Island.
What is Return to Monkey Island?
Return to Monkey Island is made by Terrible Toybox and published by Devolver Digital, in association with Lucasfilm Games. A sequel to the classic Monkey Island adventure games, Return to Monkey Island will see Guybrush Threepwood continue his journey to become the most notorious pirate in the Caribbean. Along the way, he’ll once again battle undead pirate rival LeChuck and attempt to solve the mysteries of Monkey Island.
When does Return to Monkey Island release?
Return to Monkey Island is releasing on PC and Nintendo Switch on Sept. 19, 2022. And as a bonus, if you pre-order the title, you will get free horse armor that does absolutely nothing!
Is Return to Monkey Island a Sequel to LeChuck’s Revenge?
Return to Monkey Island will continue the story from the ending of LeChuck's Revenge. This means Return to Monkey Island takes place after what many fans consider to be the last “true” Monkey Island game, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. Although Monkey Island has had many sequels, including The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island, and Tales from Monkey Island, LeChuck’s Revenge is the game most want to see get a sequel. However, some popular elements from later games, such as Murray the Demonic Talking Skull, are confirmed to be included.

Is Return to Monkey Island written by Ron Gilbert?
Ron Gilbert is the original creator and writer of the first two Monkey Island games. He has since worked for Telltale Games and is currently working with Terrible Toybox, the studio creating Return to Monkey Island. Alongside Ron Gilbert, one of the original Secret of Monkey Island writers, Dave Grossman is also returning, as well as several of the composers and voice talents.
Which voice actors are returning for Return to Monkey Island?
Dominic Armato, Alexandra Boyd, and Denny Delk are returning to their roles of Guybrush Threepwood, Elaine Marley, and Murray the Demonic Talking Skull, respectively. Unfortunately, Earl Boen, the voice of LeChuck, will not be returning as the voice of LeChuck.
What platforms will Return to Monkey Island be on?
Return to Monkey Island will be available on Nintendo Switch and on PC via Steam when it launches later in 2022. No word has been given regarding other consoles, so we expect it to remain exclusive to PC and Switch.

The official trailer is voiced over by Guybrush Threepwood himself and confirms the appearance of a few familiar faces, including LeChuck and Elaine. Most importantly, it shows off the new and stunning art style.
