If you're reading this article, chances are the Roblox app or website isn't working for you right now (same here) and you're wondering why—is this an internal issue with your PC or phone, or is Roblox experiencing a global server outage that's out of your control? More often than not, the latter is the culprit, meaning that it's up to the tech wizards at Roblox to find the disruption and fix it as soon as possible.
Why is Roblox not working today?
At the time of this update (May 18, 2024, 10am CT), Roblox players are currently experiencing error code 504 or 502, which both disallow players from connecting to the Roblox servers at all. You might even see the occasional 9XXX, which is essentially the same thing. The current educated guess is because of a particular game (A Dusty Trip) reaching a grand total of 500,000 players collectively joining the game, which Roblox's current servers cannot handle.
However, Roblox has yet to comment on this issue, but the official server status website does reflect the disruption, so it's likely being worked on right now and will be fixed within the next few hours. In the meantime, why not check out #RobloxDown on X (formerly Twitter) to see how everyone is coping? It should give you a good laugh in the meantime!
What is Error Code 502 or 504?
Error Code 502, 504, or any 5XX is an error that occurs when your server/device takes "too long" to connect to the other end's server (Roblox's in this case). It can happen due to a multitude of reasons, from servers not functioning properly to an overload of users. The latter is likely the case today. Current users saw A Dusty Trip reach over 500,000+ users, which broke servers.
Typically, this type of error can unfortunately not be fixed by the user—instead, your best bet is to regularly check the Roblox status page, which monitors statuses across the entirety of Roblox and updates accordingly when issues occur.
There are cases, however, where this error comes to you as a glitch. If you believe that your internet connection is causing the 5XX error, we suggest disconnecting and reconnecting to your wifi and then restarting your router. You could also try logging out of Roblox, waiting a bit of time, and then logging back in.
