You can train your horses in a variety of ways in The Sims 4, all of which will improve your horse's ability to compete in horse shows. Some of the skills you can hone, like temperament, will also work to improve your Sim's relationship with their horse. Skills like jumping, however, may be more limited in their use.

All training for horses is initiated by your Sim, meaning all of it needs to be done manually. Try and use the same Sim every time, or at least Sims of equal riding abilities. This will keep your horse trained at a consistent level by the same level of talent as Sims.

Socializing with your horse is the main way to bond with your horse. Specifically, you'll want to complete positive social interactions with your horse, like joking and affectionate behavior. Keep in mind that some horses are harder to bond with than others, due to personality traits. These horses will take more time to warm up to their new owners. Also, take the opportunity to calm down upset horses to bond even more with them.
