There are very few map icons in Sons of the Forest due to the fact that the map is so limited. The GPS displays three icons at first, with some more added as things are discovered. The initial icons are meant to guide players to important areas, but custom icons can be placed on the map too. These are what every map icon means in Sons of the Forest.
What all map icons mean in Sons of the Forest
At the start of Sons of the Forest, players can see their helicopter icon before rescuing Kelvin the companion, adding an additional map icon as the letter K. The purple markers mark important and useful items, namely weapons, of which some require the shovel to get. The green circles are connected to the story and usually have items that progress the story or doors that require special keys to enter to progress. Finally, there are the white markers that indicate where a cave can be found. Most caves just have materials for crafting, but a few contain items that are important to progress through the game.

Additional icons can be used when using the GPS Locators to mark other things players deem important. These other icons display multiple colors and can be used to mark anything that players want. The locator can be used on Virginia to track her and have a custom icon to the player's liking. These can be found at various green circle locations and must be placed on something to be active.
