The trailer for Star Ocean The Second Story R shows off a 2.5D real-time combat RPG with an updated design throughout for the remake. Characters are pixelized against a backdrop of a modern-looking world. On the RPG gameplay side, players can expect Art, Cooking, Metal Crafting, and more to be featured.

The story follows Claude, an officer for the Federation helping Rena attempt to save her own kind on this planet new to Claude. Players can act as either Rena or Claude, and the choice will affect the information you receive about the story, as well as which party members you can recruit. Several different endings are possible for players to explore.
