The First Age Pickaxe is a unique tool you can unlock after rebuilding the Great Forge of Narvi. However, it's not easy to make the First Age Pickaxe as it requires resources and various steps to get them.
How to Craft a First Age Pickaxe in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria
Before making a First Age Pickaxe, we recommend completing the Forge a Steel Pickaxe quest. Completing the quest is a required step, as you need Steel ingots and a Steel Pickaxe before you can make the First Age Pickaxe. Completing the quest will also unlock the crafting recipe for making a First Age pickaxe in Return to Moria.
That said, you can complete the quest by repairing the Great Forge of Narvi with Replacement Gears and Cranks. You can make these Replacement Gears and Cranks via the Forge with three Iron Ingots.
After repairing the Great Forge of Narvi, you can make a First Age Pickaxe using the following materials:
- Three Steel Ingots.
- One Black Diamond.
- Four Ubasam Wood.
- One Gem Cutter near a forge.
Where to find Black Diamonds in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria
Players can find Black Diamonds by looting Orc Chests found in Orc Man encampments inside the Elven Quarters and below. Below is an example of where you can find an Orc chest at Orc encampment in-game:
Before you can open the Orc Chest to loot Black Diamonds, you must first locate an Orc Key hidden nearby. You can also get Black Diamond from Horde events. One Horde event will start after you repair the Great Forge of Narvi. You can start Horde events by making noise in dangerous areas as well like the Mines of Moria location.

Where to find Ubasam Wood in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria
You can find Ubasam Wood in the Lower Depths area in Return to Moria by chopping down Mushroom trees. Below is an example of Mushroom trees that give Ubasam Wood:
How to make Steel Ingots in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria
To make Steel Ingots, you need three Iron ore and three coal. You can mine both via Iron and Coal deposits, as shown below:

To build a Gem Cutter in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria, you need the following materials:
- 10 Ubasam Wood.
- 10 Stone Blocks.
- Three Steel Ingots.
