Dragonflight 10.1 introduces the much-needed rework of the upgrade system, and the process is a bit different from before. A number of things have changed, but it does still remain somewhat reminiscent of the old system. Here's everything you need to know about upgrading your gear in World of Warcraft Dragonflight 10.1.
How to use the new Upgrade System in WoW Dragonflight 10.1
The first thing you'll want to note is that only new gear introduced in 10.1 and Season 2 will be able to use the new upgrade system. Any gear obtained from previous content will continue to use the old or not be upgradable at all anymore.
With that out of the way, a set of new currencies have been introduced for the new system. While this sounds dreadful at first, understand that it's actually a good thing, centralizing most of the gear available under one system.

To begin upgrading your gear, you'll need Flightstones and Shadowflame Crests, which can be obtained by completing various activities throughout Season 2. This includes quests and drops from the new zone, Zaralek Cavern. Flightstones are a solo currency required for gear upgrading, but Shadowflame Crests come in four different flavors:
- Whelping Shadowflame Crest
- Drake Shadowflame Crest
- Wyrm Shadowflame Crest
- Aspect Shadowflame Crest
These four crests come from different sources throughout Season 2. The type of crest that drops for you will depend on the difficulty of the content. For example, Whelping crests are from general open-world content and are the weakest of all four. What do I mean by weakest? The level of crest you use determines how high an item can upgrade to via item level.
To actually start the upgrading process, head to Loamm or any Item Upgrade vendor located throughout the Dragon Islands. If you do head to Loamm, the new hub located below the Dragon Isles, seek out Cuzolth situated within the inn. Speak with him, and select the item you wish to upgrade. Depending on the gear, it may only cost you Flightstones to do so. The better the gear, however, the more likely it will require one of the mentioned crests.
