There are many Pokémon cards produced throughout the years, but there are only a few that can be honored with the rare and expensive titles. That's why we chose some of the best of the best for this list. We have chosen not to include cards that were never intended for players, such as the 25th-anniversary celebrity collaborator cards.
Tropical Wind
There exists a very rare Tropical Wind card that was meant for players but only printed for an exclusive group. In 1999, there was a Tropical Mega Battle card tournament in Hawaii. Players at this event were specifically invited to play, meaning no one could simply sign up. There are said to be less than 70 copies available, with one selling in Oct. 2020 for $65,100.
No. 2 Trainer Battle Road Summer
This rare card is another tournament exclusive from Japan in 2002, though there seem to be even fewer copies than the Tropical Wind card. There have been only a couple of confirmed copies of this card, as well as only one confirmed in high quality. For those wondering about set value, this card is so rare that there is not a current public evaluation.
Umbreon Gold Star Holo
This beautiful card has a devoted, coveted following. Produced in 2005, the card was given to Pokémon Player's Club members who got a certain amount of XP in matches within a frame of time. While you can find some of these cards for a few hundred dollars, finding a verified copy in mint condition can go for as much as $70,000.
Lugia 1st Edition Neo Genesis
While this card was not meant to originally be rare when it was first produced in 2000, it has since become quite a collector's item. This majestic card even sold a mint condition version of it in 2020 for $144,300. There are said to only be three copies of this high-quality mint condition that exist within the world today.
Venusaur No Rarity Symbol Base Set
This card set doesn't actually go for very much in regular condition, but it can be quite profitable under the right circumstances. Made in 1996, these peculiar cards have no official rarity symbol on their cards. In 2021, a set that was in top condition and autographed by Pokémon artist Mitsuhiro Arita sold for $55,000.
