The Last of Us is one of the most popular PlayStation titles of all time. The zombie game from Naughty Dog defined what it meant to tell a cinematic, story-driven experience within a video game. Now, after nine years, the game is being completely rebuilt from the ground up and being rebranded as The Last of Us Part I.
What is The Last of Us Part I?
The Last of Us Part I is a complete remake of the original The Last of Us, which was released in 2013 for the PS3. It was then remastered for the PS4 in 2014 and followed up with a sequel, The Last of Us Part II, in 2020. PlayStation wanted to bring players the definitive Last of Us experience by completely rebuilding the game from the ground up. New animations, models, and AI systems will make it play the way Naughty Dog originally envisioned it. Also, to better fit the game into the overarching franchise, the game has been rebranded as The Last of Us Part I.
When does The Last of Us Part I release?
The Last of Us Part I is confirmed for PS5 on Sep. 2, 2022. This was confirmed when Neil Druckmann shared the first look at the rebuilt title at Summer Game Fest. You can check out the trailer for yourself below.

What platforms will The Last of Us Part I be playable on?
The Last of Us is known as one of the all-time greatest PlayStation exclusive titles. Both the first game and the second were available to play only on PlayStation consoles. However, that looks to be changing with The Last of Us Part I. This rebuilt version of the first game will be released on both PS5 and PC. While so far only the PS5 version of the game has a release date, PC players can take solace in the fact that the game is explicitly being developed for PC.
What is different from the original The Last of Us (2013)?
With a game from 2013 that is being totally rebuilt, there are bound to be a few changes. One of the biggest changes confirmed by Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, is the overall visual fidelity. The game will feature higher resolution textures, fresh animations, and reworked enemy AI.
Some other changes that we expect to see are the removal of the Factions multiplayer and added Dual Sense capabilities. The Factions multiplayer mode for the original game was shut down, and Naughty Dog will most likely not want to draw attention away from their standalone Factions game that's in the works. Also, as a PS5 title, we will no doubt see Dual Sense features in-game, such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
