How does the Spirit Box work in Phasmophobia

The voice is so delightfully unnerving.

The Spirit Box is a device that can be used to hear the Ghost talk to the player in Phasmophobia. It is a key piece of evidence that can help narrow down which Ghost Type is in the area. It requires players to use the microphone in order to speak to the Ghost, eliciting a response from the Ghost through the Spirit Box. This is how the Spirit Box works in Phasmophobia.

How the Spirit Box works In Phasmophobia

Using the Spirit Box in Phasmophobia requires that players have their microphones correctly set up. If they are on Push To Talk, they must be transmitted by holding their designated button for it. This is the "V" key by default.

How to use the Spirit Box

The Spirit Box has some prerequisites for it to work properly and can be used either in hand or on the floor.

  • Being inside the investigation area - The Spirit Box will have no response unless players are inside the area they are supposed to investigate.
  • Players must be in the haunted room - The Spirit Box has a reach of three meters so players will have to be in the same room as the Ghost or within three meters of the room to work.
  • Lights must be off - Lights outside the room and from equipment can be on, but the room's lights must be off for the Spirit Box to work. This doesn't include lamps, however.

In addition to these rules, there is the added mechanic of whether the Ghost will respond to people who are alone or not. This is information that is given to players on the White Board at the start of the match on Amateur and Intermediate difficulty.

What does the 'X' mean on the Spirit Box

The 'X' on the Spirit Box can indicate that players do not meet the requirements for it to be able to speak to them. In other words, if the lights are on, the Ghost won't speak until only one person is in the room, or if the player is too far from the haunted room, the 'X' will appear on the screen.

There is a list of questions that players can ask the Ghost to elicit a response, but there is only a two in three chance of it working. Even if the 'X' shows up, players should keep the Spirit Box as this is down to luck some of the time.
