Genshin Impact's Archons have many names, but each Archon has a name inspired by a real-life source, the Ars Goetia, a text that lists and ranks demons. The name of the Hydro Archon that's inspired by this text is Focalors. Read on for more information about the Hydro archon and this name's origins.
Who is Focalors, the Hydro Archon, in Genshin Impact?
The Hydro Archon rules over Fontaine, a nation located around the center of Teyvat. It's the most technologically advanced nation in Teyvat. We also know that Fontaine is currently amid an energy crisis through Bertrand, an NPC, and Toymaker from Fontaine, who you might have interacted with during the Core of the Apparatus event. Fontaine is known as the Nation of Justice, and its court system reigns supreme.
The current Hydro Archon does not judge trials in Fontaine herself but is known to make herself present at most trails. Nahida, the Dendro Archon, says that she has a "unique personality," and though she does not judge the trials, she has been known to sway the outcomes of trials from time to time. She has not appeared in-game, and we have no hints yet about her appearance.
Focalors is not the first Hydro Archon. However, we do not yet know how, why, and at what point in time she became the new Hydro Archon. The Oceanid field boss' description informs us that the prior Hydro Archon is dead. After their death, the Oceanids fled Fontaine to spread fragments of their beloved and deceased Archon all over Teyvat.
Who is Focalor from the Ars Goetia?
Focalor of the Ars Goetia does not have an "s" at the end of their name but was likely the inspiration for Genshin Impact's Hydro Archon's demon name. Focalor is a Great Duke of Hell, forty-first out of seventy-one demons. They have a humanoid appearance with griffon wings and were typically associated with power over the sea. This demon hoped to someday return to heaven as an angel, but to no avail.
