The Ice Type is one of the weakest Pokémon Types defensively in the series but has a good offensive presence. Terastalization helps Ice Pokémon tremendously because they can keep their STAB while also being able to become a more defensive Type. The increase in their Defense from Snow gives them some survivability, but sometimes it is too little, too late. Using Ice Types can be tricky because of how common their Type weaknesses are in the movepools of Pokémon, but this guide should help. These are all Ice Type Pokémon's weaknesses and strengths and what Pokémon best counter them.
What is Ice weak to in Pokémon?
Ice has four weaknesses, making it difficult to work with. This is higher than Bug Type Pokémon's amount of weaknesses but still does much better offensively than Bug does. For super effective damage players should use:
- Fire - 2x
- Fighting - 2x
- Rock - 2x
- Steel - 2x
What are Ice Type Pokémon immune to in Pokémon?
Ice Type Pokémon don't have any immunities and will take damage from any moves. In older generations, they would take damage from Hail but Generation IX replaced the effects of Hail with Snow.

What is Ice strong against in Pokémon?
Offensively, Ice Type moves are very strong due to how many Pokémon they can deal super effective damage to. Ice Type moves will deal super effective damage to:
- Flying - 2x
- Grass - 2x
- Ground - 2x
- Dragon - 2x
Defensively, Ice Type Pokémon will take reduced damage from only Ice moves. Their lack of Type resistances is what makes Ice Types difficult to play with because they can't switch into moves without taking a lot of damage.
What are the best counters to Ice Types in Pokémon?
When battling Ice Type Pokémon or encountering Ice Type moves, these Types will take reduced damage:
- Fire - 1/2
- Water - 1/2
- Ice - 1/2
- Steel - 1/2
This makes both Fire and Steel Type Pokémon the best counters for battling Ice Type Pokémon. This is because both of these Types can deal super effective damage to Ice Type Pokémon and will also take reduced damage from their STAB moves. Kingambit, Skeledirge, and Quaquaval are great counters to Ice Type Pokémon and have great stats to deal with non-resisted moves.
