Torchlight 3: How to enchant items

Power up your items by infusing them with enchantments in Torchlight 3!
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

On your journey throughout the world of Torchlight 3, no doubt, you'll come across some consumables that can be used to enchant your items! However, the items that can be enchanted have to have enchantment slots to make this process happen. If an item does not have any slots available, then sadly, the item cannot be enchanted. However, this process has greatly changed since the early access release, and you can no longer get the Enchantment Table early on in the game. We've got the information to help you out, so here's our guide on how to enchant items in Torchlight 3!

Unlocking the Enchanting Table

To start enchanting items, you need an Enchanting Table and Altar for your Fort; however, this table is no longer available to acquire until near enough End Game. According to a developer on the Steam Discussions Forums:

The Enchanting Table and Recipe is now an end game mechanic. You unlock Enchanting and will start to see recipes drop at level 47.

Source

The quest to begin your enchanting journey is now locked behind the game's story mode. Once the story mode is finished, by talking to an NPC, they'll begin to explain enchanting to you, as well as giving you the Enchanting table to place in your Fort.

This is causing some controversy, as, during your playthrough, materials and recipes can drop before Enchanting becomes available, which is very misleading to people who have played early access and then playing the full release. Or even people playing for the first time, to get items so early on for something that's End Game, is jarring at best. The Steam Discussions Forums are flooded with questions about it all.

How to enchant items

There is no exact science behind enchanting, you'll receive a certain recipe, and it's more or less random on what will happen. Not random as in anything can happen, more along the lines, certain recipes have a limited amount of random things out of a table that can occur. If you have one enchantment slot, and you use, for example, the Shock and Awe recipe, the following things could occur:

  • Electric damage
  • Shock chance
  • Shock Duration
  • Shock Bolts
  • Stun Chance
  • Blind Chance
  • Blind Duration

Any of these could be applied to your one slot!

The beauty of the table is that you can also disenchant items you don't use or need to get the materials to enchant more things you do use. You have to disenchant a lot of items to get the resources needed, and the better the item you want to enchant, the higher materials you need. For example, you cannot use common essence to enchant a legendary item - you need to use legendary essence to enchant a legendary item.
