Sea of Thieves Safer Seas private server feature marks a release date

Sea of Thieves is going to get a lot safer.

One of the most highly requested features in Sea of Thieves is the option to play single-player or on private servers. In fact I, myself, just want to sail the seas, go fishing, and live the pirate life without having to watch over my shoulder. Amazingly, Season 10 of Sea of Thieves will allow me to do just that in Safer Seas.

Sea of Thieves revealed Safer Seas through its Season 10 preview on the official Sea of Thieves YouTube channel, giving a glimpse and breakdown of how Safer Seas would differ from the normal game. Safer Seas looks to be a great compromise between keeping the game's core values and giving players the solo pirate experience they've been asking for, and it plans to launch in January 2024.

How do Safer Seas work in Sea of Thieves?

Safer Seas are private servers in Sea of Thieves, allowing you to play alone or with three friends. Most of the activities in High Seas, the regular Sea of Thieves experience, are available to you and your crew.

However, there are some limitations. Here is what you can expect in Safer Seas for Sea of Thieves:

  • Progress to level 40 in all Trading Companies (Excluding Reaper's Bones and Athena's Fortune).
  • Earn and Reputation at a reduced rate (30%).
  • Earn Seasonal Renown at the same rate as High Seas.
  • Play through all Tall Tales solo or with your friends.
  • Work towards all applicable Commendations and Achievements.
  • Purchase cosmetics from the Outpost and Seapost stores.
  • Invite any Xbox Live friends into your session.
