I have fun with any Sorcerer subclass in Baldur's Gate 3, but some of the subclass abilities are more powerful than the others. If you're wondering which are the best, here are the Sorcerer subclasses ranked.
Sorcerer Subclasses ranked in BG3
3. Wild Magic
Wild Magic may be one of the most fun subclasses in the game, but the core abilities can be extremely beneficial or detrimental to your party. The Wild Magic abilities Tides of Chaos, Bend Luck, and Controlled Chaos are powerful, but do not exactly measure up to the other subclasses.
Tides of Chaos can be a game-changer at Level 1 with the ability to gain advantage on your next roll. Bend Luck can be a great ability to use in difficult situations, but you should consider if it is worth using 2 Sorcery Points. At Level 11, Controlled Chaos is an amazing ability to throw off spellcasters, especially in fights where they are difficult to reach.
Here are the abilities you will unlock by choosing the Wild Magic Sorcerer subclass:
Level | Ability | Description |
1 | Tides of Chaos | Activate to gain Advantage on your next Attack Roll, Ability Check, or Saving Throw |
1 | Wild Magic | When casting a spell of 1st-level or higher, there's a chance for a random effect to occur in addition to the effects of the spell. |
6 | Bend Luck | When a creature you can see makes an Attack Roll, Ability Check, or a Saving Throw, you can use your reaction and spend 2 Sorcery Points to roll 1d4, applying the number rolled as a bonus or penalty to the creature's roll. |
11 | Controlled Chaos | Foes may suffer a Wild Magic Surge while casting spells near your fluctuating magic |
2. Storm Sorcery
Storm Sorcery is a powerful subclass early on, especially since it unlocks the ability to Fly as a bonus action after casting a spell. The other abilities focus on dealing thunder or lightning damage and grant resistance to those damage types as well. Storm Sorcery is a great option for Sorcerers who want to be mobile and wield the power of lightning and thunder.
The Heart of the Storm abilities at Level 6 make the subclass pretty powerful, but the ability to Fly at Level 1 is really what sets Storm Sorcery apart from the others.
Here are the abilities you unlock by choosing the Storm Sorcery subclass:
Level | Ability | Description |
1 | Tempestuous Magic | After you cast a Level 1 spell or higher you can Fly as a bonus action until the end of your turn without receiving Opportunity Attacks. |
6 | Heart of the Storm | When you cast a spell of Level 1 or higher that deals Lightning or Thunder damage, you cause a small, local storm. All enemies within 6m take 3 Lightning or Thunder damage. |
6 | Heart of the Storm: Resistance | You are Resistant to Lightning and Thunder damage. |
6 | Storm Spells | Learn Thunderwave, Create or Destroy Water, Gust of Wind, Sleet Storm, or Call Lightning. |
11 | Storm's Fury | When you are hit by a melee attack, you deal Lightning damage to the attacker and have a chance to push them away. |
1. Draconic Bloodline
Draconic Bloodline is the best Sorcerer subclass due to its abilities scaling very well, including gaining additional health at each level, gaining a resistance of your choice, and having higher AC with no armor. The Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer can get extremely powerful spells while also being able to take damage and stay in the fight.
Getting Draconic Resilience at Level 1 can be the best way to increase your AC without having to take an armor proficiency. When building a Draconic Sorcerer, it is important to consider what element your spells do because at Level 6, you can choose what element to add your Charisma modifier to. The Level 11 Fly ability is not as good as Storm Sorcery, but since it is a free action to fly, you can use it more often than Storm Sorcery's Fly.

6 | Elemental Affinity: Damage | When you cast a spell that deals damage of the type associated with your draconic ancestry, you add your Charisma modifier to the damage. |
6 | Elemental Affinity: Resistance | When you cast a spell that deals damage of the type associated with your draconic ancestry, you can spend 1 Sorcery Point to gain Resistance to that damage type. |
