How to make a Steel Pickaxe in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria

Make a new Pickaxe!

Making a Steel Pickaxe in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria is tricky, as I found it requires a few steps and repairing an ancient elven forge. In this guide, I will explain all the steps for making a Steel Pickaxe.

To make a Steel Pickaxe, you must reach the Elven Quarter area. Inside the Elven Quarters, you must find a minable wall that you can not mine with a Simple Pickaxe. You can find the wall deep within the Elven Quarters as shown below:

We recommend exploring the area thoroughly as worlds in Lord of the Rings Return to Moria randomly generate areas. In my game, we found the wall near a waterfall—it could be in a similar location in your game. After finding the mineable wall, you'll get a quest called Forge a Steel Pickaxe that requires finding and rebuilding an Elven forge.

The Elven forge is the Great Forge of Narvi, which I found near the central part of the Elven Quarter. Repairing the Forge requires cranks and various gears highlighted in yellow after you find the Forge. Below is an example of both the cranks and gears after they are placed in their respective slots:

In my world, I managed to find three of the required gears and cranks in the initial area. I found the last gear/crank outside the forge area near an orc encampment. If you can't find all the items, you can build all of the required parts via the Forge, shown below:

To make any gears, cranks, or pipes requires three iron ingots. We recommend building an outpost with both a Forge and a Furnace in the same room as the Elven Forge. Doing so saves time and allows you to carry the parts to repair Elven Forge fast.

After repairing the Elven Forge, you can make a Steel Pickaxe with the following materials:

  • Three Steel Ingots
  • Four Elven Wood
  • One Hide

To track a deposit of Iron ore, open your map and select an Iron ore waypoint from the left side of your screen. Below is an example of what both Iron ore and Coal deposits look like in-game: If you struggle to find Coal, you can turn 25 wood scraps into Coal via the Stone Hearth.

Players can find Elven wood by chopping down trees located within the Elven Quarter. We recommend using an Iron War Axe to chop the Elven trees to make the process of gathering the wood faster. You can make an Iron War Axe using the following materials via the Forge:

  • Two Iron Ingots
  • Four Wood Scraps
  • Two Hide Scraps
