You may have got your tavern up and running in medieval RPG Wartales: The Tavern Opens but the work has only begun. If you want to be a success, you will have to beat the competition, so read on to find out how to infiltrate other taverns and get the better of them.
How to infiltrate rival taverns in Wartales The Tavern Opens
You have four options if you want to infiltrate a tavern. You can infiltrate as many different (lower-ranked, and the one just above you in the rankings) taverns as you like concurrently, but each can only be infiltrated by one infiltrator at a time.
- Bard: Potential to gain Prestige. This helps you more quickly rise through the tavern rankings.
- Bouncer: Potential to remove Prestige from the tavern (see below). This is important to take from the rival above you to make it easier for you to move up the ranking table.
- Brewer: Potential to steal their Secret Brewing Recipe (one per tavern). After this, later Brewers sent to infiltrate will gain Patrons. Successfully stealing a Brewing Recipe will allow a Brewer to make that recipe at your camp, as well as allow your brewing team in the tavern to offer the new alcohol type.
- Cook: Potential to steal their Secret Cooking Recipe (one per tavern). Once you have stolen their secret cooking recipe, later cooks sent to infiltrate will instead claim bonus Patrons. Successfully stealing a Cooking Recipe will allow a Cook to make that recipe at your camp, as well as allow your tavern cooking to offer the new alcohol type.
- Thief: Potential to steal Copper Coins. A high-quality thief can turn a nice profit with little risk by hitting low-level taverns. For example, a Master Thief infiltrating a no-star tavern over four shifts will cost you 20 Copper in wages but steal 40 Copper in return. Note that the Prestige Level as well as the Star Rating of a tavern affect your reward, but only the Star Level affects difficulty.

You can send any of your staff (or hire new staff) who aren’t currently working in the tavern on infiltration missions. While on the mission they will continue to earn half pay, as if they were in your reserve, and will still show up in your reserve. However, they’ll be marked as an infiltrator and will not be available again until they return.
Note that, as with working in your tavern, any staff member can infiltrate as a Bouncer instead of as their chosen profession. Their bouncer level is always considered to be the same as that of their chosen profession (Bard, Cook, etc).
You can cancel any infiltrator mission at any time on the Rival Taverns screen (just click the Cancel Mission button). Alternatively, you can fire them completely from the Staffing menu.
What affects your chance of a successful infiltration?
There are several options you can alter to make it easier to succeed in your tavern infiltration attempts.
- Staff member quality: The better the staff member is at their job (profession level) when you send them on the infiltration attempt the better their base chance of success. For example, an ApprenticeBrewer will only have a 4 percent chance of infiltrating a two-star tavern if you send them for two shifts (and 0 percent for one shift), while an Experienced Brewer would have a 14 percent chance after two shifts (4 percent after one).
- Shifts spent infiltrating: Each extra shift you leave your infiltrator in the rival tavern for will add 10 percent to their success chance. However, you are only allowed to send them for a maximum of five shifts.
- Rival tavern Star level: The higher the star ranking the tavern currently has, the harder it will be for you to infiltrate it.
- Tavern ranking: You can only attempt to infiltrate taverns that are one place higher than you on the Tavern Rankings leaderboard, regardless of the quality of the infiltrator or the number of shifts you send them for. You can also infiltrate all of the taverns below you in the rankings.

Once a member of staff goes off on an infiltration attempt the only thing that will affect their chance of success is if the infiltrated tavern loses a star while they’re on the mission. In this case, the new lower Star Rating will change their success chance (making it more likely to succeed). Any completed infiltration results (successes and failures) will appear at the bottom of your shift report.
Why are the rival tavern’s Prestige and Star Ranking important?
Rising on the Tavern Ranking table offers several advantages:
- Each new star rating you achieve (by climbing the table) will give you a reward from the Taverns Guild.
- You can only infiltrate taverns one position above you (or anywhere below) in the table. The higher you get, the more taverns you can infiltrate at once.
- Each tavern has two recipes to steal (one Brwing and one cooking). Infiltration is the only way to get these particular recipes.
The Star Level of the tavern you attempt to infiltrate will affect how difficult it will be to succeed with the infiltration and the reward you will receive if you infiltrate for anything other than recipes. The Prestige Level affects their position in the tavern rankings and also the rewards you get (not including recipes).
