Indie Games Coming in January 2019

Vane

Release Date: January 15th - Platform(s): PS4

Vane is an upcoming game from Friend & Foe Games, who made titles such as Last Guardian and Killzone. The game largely reminds me of Abzu and Journey based off the trailer and description of it. These are largely adventure and atmospheric styles of game that let you experience their worlds without much dialogue or explicit lore. You are meant to learn the story by playing the game, and will come to understand what went on within the world the deeper you go. Vane has you shifting perspectives between bird and child as you traverse the barren landscape.

Genesis Alpha One

Release Date: January 29th, 2019 - Platform(s): PC, PS4, Xbox

While there's a bit of controversy surrounding this game now due to the fact that they will be not coming out on Steam for a full year (going exclusive with Epic Game Store), this is still an anticipated indie title. The game mixes elements of roguelikes, ship building, and a first person shooter together. You will be looking to survive in space and find planets suitable for humanity's DNA.

Heat

Release Date: January 2019 - Platform(s): PC

While I know the survival genre is kind of flooded with games, this new edition to the list seems like it could be interesting. You play in the turn of the century of America, which is when people were grabbing up land and trying to make a mark on the land. The twist on this game is that it appears you can play as the President of the United States, Sheriff, Chief of a Tribe, or even as a Governor. While we're not exactly sure how those elements are integrated into the game, they sure have us intrigued.

Meeple Station

Release Date: January 2019 - Platform(s): PC

Meeple Station is a strategy simulation style of game that allows you to build your own space station. If you've played games like Rimworld in the past, this is very much that style of game. You build your base, develop goods, defend, and care for your inhabitants! I'm actually a big fan of this style of game, there have been others like this in the past like Gnomoria and Stonehearth, but they usually don't ever get finished. Here's hoping that Meeple Station won't suffer the same fate!

Session

Release Date: January 2019 - Platform(s): PC, Xbox

If you've been waiting for a follow-up to the Skate series you might be excited to know that Session is looking to be that spiritual successor. This is not your Tony Hawk style of skateboarding game, but a more legit sim that seeks to be an authentic skateboarding experience. However, we can only hope we still get the same kind of soundtrack we'd get with those old school Hawk games that were part of the magic in those games.

What Never Was

Release Date: January 11th, 2019 - Platform(s): PC

This game looks like an interesting trip into the past as you dig through a loved ones things. The game is inspired by point-and-click games with the gameplay of Myst and borrow themes from norse mythology and the work of H.P. Lovecraft. Those elements thrown together into one game make for what could be a very interesting experience. The concept feels very original, and I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

Indie Games Coming in February 2019 and Q1

Paws and Soul

Release Date: Q1 2019 - Platform(s): PC

Take control of a wolf and explore a forest while you attempt to reveal the secrets from your past life. This is more of a chill relaxing game as you traverse this magical and surreal looking area. Might be a great game to turn out the lights with and just kickback to enjoy the imagery.

AWAY: Journey to the Unexpected

Release Date: Q1 2019 - Platform(s): PC, Xbox, PS4, Switch

While I'm usually not a huge anime game fan, this one actually look really interesting. It's a first person game, but you are doing a lot more melee attacking than actual shooting. I really love the art-style of this game, and it will have RPG and Rogue-lite elements which should make for an interesting combination.

A Fold Apart

Release Date: February 14th, 2019 - Platform(s): PC, Xbox, PS4, Switch

A Fold Apart is a bit of a different game than the previous ones mentioned. This one is about a long distance relationship and the emotional struggle that comes with it. It's a 3D puzzle game with the unique mechanic of folding paper! This one might tug a bit on the emotional heart strings, and they are even releasing it on Valentine's Day to further the potential melancholy. This one might hit a bit too close to home for some people, but it looks like a sweet game nonetheless.

Fimbul

Release Date: February 28th, 2019 - Platform(s): PC, Xbox, PS4, Switch

Fimbul is set in the final winter before Ragnarok, so if you enjoyed God of War and some of the mythology that came with that you should be at least slightly interested in this game. The game is set out to be a comic-book in style, and the artstyle is very unique against the stark winter backdrop. This is an action-adventure game, that kind of looks like the recent Ashen that was released. I'm not sure where this game will compare in difficulty, but it will be releasing on all major platforms.

The Occupation

Release Date: February 5th, 2019 - Platform(s): PC, Xbox, PS4, Switch

If you like investigative games with a unique story then this might tickle your fancy. The Occupation is a first-person, fixed-time, investigative thriller set in North West England. You play as a journalist, and you'll be tasked to investigate and question people on their actions from one disastrous night. While not really the same, this does share some similarities with Return of the Obra Dinn.
