Cyberpunk 2.0 Police System explained

Start the timer!

Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 features a completely revamped police system, finally bringing a worthy crime-fighting experience this game deserves. After many police encounters that ended up with me swiftly stealing a car or a bike and riding off to the sunset, with members of law enforcement seemingly unable to comprehend the concept of commuting by traffic, I felt my immersion immediately break. All that ends with the latest 2.0 patch, so let's review what CDPR has in store for us.

Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 Police Rework features a newly introduced star system representing your wanted level in the game. Each new crime you commit will earn you more stars and increased police presence. Starting from regular street troopers with basic armament and drones, progressively moving to tougher units, like armored teams and robots. Once you ruffle enough feathers and gain the five-star wanted level, the infamous MaxTac will start coming after you.

Getting the wanted level in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0

If you want to get a wanted level in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0, all you have to do is commit a crime while in a populated area, and the police will be on you very quickly, earning you a one-star rank. I found that the city center is crawling with the police, so getting their attention is always easy. If you return fire and start killing cops, you will raise your wanted level to two stars. Personally, I haven't had too much trouble dealing with the police up until three stars.

As you hit a four-star wanted level, heavier units will start to roll out, deploying armored officers and police bots to fight you. You will have a feeling that the entire Night City is swarming with the police as they start coming out of nowhere. I felt like a cop replaced every single NPC as I was fighting them. If you keep killing enough cops, you will finally get the attention of the infamous MaxTac units.

MaxTac operators are normally deployed against cyber-psychos, incredibly dangerous individuals who tend to snap and leave a massive body count before they are put down. Therefore, these guys come with their own archetypes and will fight you both in real and cyberspace as they track the vehicle you're driving and hack it to make it stop or go in the way they wish it to. Once they deployed, they made the job of putting me down look way too easy.

Losing your wanted level in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0

Losing your wanted level in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0, you must stay out of sight of your pursuers for a certain amount of time. How easy or hard that will be will depend on how many stars you have racked up.

  • One star: losing cops at this level is easy; simply move away from their field of view, and you should be fine. If you steal a car and drive away, you should be fine.
  • Two stars: This level is marginally harder than the last. A few more units will deploy, and going mobile will lose them quickly. Just drive in a straight line, and you should see the stars flashing.
  • Three stars: Things start to get interesting as the cops start laying spike strips and deploying barricades at this level. Try to hide near larger junctions, as they provide you with multiple escape routes.
  • Four stars: This wanted level is significantly harder to eliminate as the number of deployed units gets significantly larger. Try to get a weaponized vehicle to shake the pursuing vehicles off because they're both durable and have a large enough mass to keep you from getting pushed off easily.
  •  Five stars: MaxTac starts deploying at this level. Dealing with those units requires a very specialized build and a high enough level and armament to survive the engagement with them. Cops also have a way of tracking your location. Having perks that boost your car combat will prove to be invaluable here.
