The Staff of Herding is used to open the Whimsyshire portal in Diablo 3, and it's also used to progress through the Altar of Rites in Season 28, so there's plenty of reasons to get it. Players will first need to collect a variety of resources before they can do so, and here's what they'll need.
How to make the Staff of Herding in Diablo 3
The exact cost of making the staff depends on whether the player is on PC or on console. Console players won't need as much to create the Staff of Herding, so they do have that going for them.

To get things started, players need to have the plans for making the staff, and those drop from Izual in Act 4. They are a random drop, so players will have to be patient if they don't drop right away. The plans drop on any difficulty, which does make farming this boss a bit easier. From there, the players need the following materials.
- 50,000 gold (5,000 on console)
- Black Mushroom
- Leoric's Shinbone (not needed on console)
- Wirt's Bell
- Liquid Rainbow (not needed on console)
- Gibbering Gemstone
It's a long process for many players to get to this point, but it'll all be worth it if players want to enter Whimsyshire or unlock a node on their Altar of Rites in Season 28. Remember, patience is key to getting all of the materials.
How to use the Staff of Herding in Diablo 3
To use the Staff of Herding, players have to travel to the Cow King's Grave. This can be done by leaving Act 1's New Tristram or warping to the Old Ruins waypoint. No matter the method, players will want to hop on the Old Tristram road and look for a glowing crevice with some cow bones next to it.
If players have the staff in their inventory, the ghost of the Cow King appears and that's when the staff is used. The crevice will turn into the entrance to Whimsyshire, and players can go inside and start exploring.
