FF16 Secrets and Easter Eggs

FFXVI also includes multiple easter eggs and references to the previous titles in the franchise, which has become a norm now. Numerous references have been made to remind the players of the series' old FF traditions and recurring elements.

Small details such as that may go unnoticed or even seem out of place for those who never played the previous games, but we really liked seeing some of them and being subtly reminded of all those details that made us love this franchise!

Man's best friend

Torgal makes for a great companion of Clive in FFXVI, aiding him in combat and providing him with company. Ever since seeing him as a small pup for the first time, we wondered if we could pet Torgal in-game, only to find out that by doing so, we could unlock one of the trophies.

Clive's Dog Whistle is the most exciting familiarity that took me back to the days of playing Final Fantasy X. It wasn't until later that we found out for sure that the sound of the whistle was the very same sound sample used by Tidus when teaching Yuna how to whistle.

Ambrosia, come!

Did you ever pay close attention to the type of whistle Clive does when he summons Ambrosia? It's the famous Tidus (Final Fantasy 10), the one he tries to teach Yuna before he fake laughs obnoxiously.

Whispers of the past

Another blast from the past happens during the Homecoming Main Quest when Clive visits Martha's Rest. Only the most astute players will notice a lonely scarecrow out on the field that looks peculiarly like Final Fantasy 9's most lovable character: Vivi Ornitier. A black mage wielding pretty nifty powers, Vivi was one of the most memorable characters, thanks to his tragic past and coming-of-age story, which left many players in tears.

Just another Spoony Bard

This reference goes back to the earliest days of Final Fantasy when it was just another Dungeons & Dragons-inspired RPG. Tellah's famous roast of Edward the Prince is probably the most memorable Quote of Final Fantasy 4, later on becoming a staple joke for all bards, especially in the Final Fantasy franchise. As a remembrance of the franchise's past, an NPC called Spoony Bard can be found in the Hideaway, playing his lute.

Matoya

Final Fantasy 16 loves the classic FF to bits, as seen in the pixel icons and, later on, adage UI menus in some of the trials in The Arete Stone. Another Final Fantasy I reference you may have missed is Charon's eerie resemblance to Matoya, a witch who helps the Warrior of Light awake the Prince of Elfheim. Matoya can't without her Crystal Eyes, and Charon really is missing an eye. They look similar too!

The Magus Brothers

If you've been doing your Hunts, you may have encountered the Mageth Brothers. Paying close attention to their names will get you Anwydd, Cinwydd, and Minwydd. Sound familiar? You've probably played Final Fantasy X a ton. The Magus Sisters is an optional Aeon you can get in FFX. They're named Sandy, Cindy, and Mindy.

Does Final Fantasy XVI have a secret ending?

Many fans of the series have wondered if there is a secret ending in the game that can somehow be unlocked, providing an alternative to the conclusion of Clive's story, or perhaps elaborating it further. This question is especially true after The Rising Tide DLC has been released, introducing a new Eikon and some of Ultima's extra motives. The short answer is no. FFXVI ended the way it was supposed to—a conclusion fit for a hero who wanted to honor a legacy.
