How to create macro commands in Final Fantasy XIV

Enter the marvellous world of macros!

Macros are an essential quality of life feature in any MMO, and Final Fantasy XIV is no exception. Effectively a small string of code that works within the game, macros can do a huge number of things that improve your gameplay.

To create a Macro in Final Fantasy XIV, navigate to the System section of the menu and select User Macros. Now you have access to the Macro creation menu, and from here, you can code and create your own Macros.

Macro commands use the prefix / , followed by the command you want to use. Quotation marks flank actions, so for example, “Cure III” would activate the White Mage ability Cure III. Items surrounded by angle brackets are targets such as <me> targeting you, the player.

Important Macro Commands to Know.

  • /say Sends a message to all PC’s nearby. Enclose your message in square brackets like this: [message]
  • /recast [action name]  Displays time remaining until an action can be recast. Useful for creating timers for your UI.
  • /targetpc Targets closest player. Great for quick raise macros
  • /wait [time] Adds a wait time of a number of second into your macro
  • <1> Target’s party member one. Use numbers 1-8 to specify party members

Advice for Macros

Try to include wait times or multiple casts of the ability. Marcos aren’t 100% reliable if you only use one cast of an ability. This is because the game operates on server ticks, and if you try to use more than one ability within a server tick, the Macro might “skip” one step.

Whenever possible, use the entire 15 lines of a macro, with wait and multiple casts to ensure things work.

Try not to rely too heavily on macros in PVE combat. While things like raises and heals sometimes work well with Macros, keep the original abilities on your bar just in case. Macro’s definitely work best outside of combat and are most useful for things like crafting, fishing, changing jobs with cool animations, and strings of emotes.

Otherwise, get creative! Macros may seem daunting to begin with, but they’re an essential part of the game and something you should use as much as possible.
