How to fish in Final Fantasy XIV

What's better than playing a game? A fishing minigame!

The hallmark of any great game is whether or not it includes a fishing minigame. Final Fantasy XIV takes fishing to the next level by dedicating an entire class to one of gaming's favored hobbies. The Fisher class (FSH) is a Disciple of the Land profession that can be acquired in Limsa Lominsa.

Players must first speak with N'nmulika in the Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (X:7.9 Y:14.2) with any level one class to learn the new profession. Like every other class in Final Fantasy XIV, players will unlock class quests at regular intervals which provide a number of benefits like new abilities and yield a large amount of EXP.

Once the Fisher class has been acquired, players will need bait to catch the fish. Bait will vary depending on the type of fishing locales like freshwater or ocean. Bait can be purchased from any Junkmonger in a major city or in the housing areas.

  • Junkmonger (Lavender Beds) X:11.7 Y:8.4
  • Junkmonger (Goblet) X:10 Y:8
  • Junkmonger (Mist) X:10.7 Y:11.6
  • Junkmonger (Shirogane) X:10.1 Y:12.7

With bait in hand, players simply need to find a body of water (other types of fishing locations will open up at later levels) around their current level, select the appropriate bait, and cast a line.

Spearfishing

Spearfishing is unlocked at Fisher level 61. Sumitsubo at the Ruby Sea (X:28.9, Y:15.9) will hand out the quest "A New Fishing Ex-spear-ience". Currently, spearfishing is only available in Stormblood, Shadowbringers, and Endwalker areas as it takes place entirely underwater. Spearfishing makes use of Gigs, of which there are three different types of gig heads. Each gig head allows for catching different kinds of fish.

Ocean Fishing

Ocean Fishing is an exclusive activity available to Fishers. Taking place on the Endeavor with up to 24 players, each ocean fishing excursion lasts up to 60 minutes. An ocean fishing expedition takes place every two hours. Players have a 15-minute window to register by speaking to Dryskthota at the Limsa Lominsa Lower Docks (X:3.0 Y:12.7). To participate, players will have needed to complete the quest "All the Fish in the Sea" available from Fhilsnoe in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks (X:7.8 Y:14.5).

The Endeavor will follow a route that changes depending on the time of day. Dryskthota will have a schedule available for players to view. The Endeavor will move to a new spot every seven minutes and offer an unparalleled view of the Eorzean locales. Ocean Fishing also awards EXP, making it ideal for leveling up.

Fishing, like in any other game, is a great way to relax and kill time when not progressing the MSQ or latest raid content. Square Enix has really fleshed out the activity, making it just as engaging as the rest of Final Fantasy XIV's content.
