Is Endwalker Final Fantasy XIV’s last expansion?

Is there more to come?

With Final Fantasy XIV’s latest expansion, Endwalker, releasing officially on Dec 7, many are excited to see the conclusion to a story that has spanned over 11 years. However, with that narrative coming to an end, the question remains is Endwalker spell the end for Final Fantasy XIV?

The short answer is, thankfully, no. Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker is the last expansion in the Hydaelyn/Zodiark storyline, which began in 2013 with Final Fantasy XIV 2.0: A Realm Reborn. It also marks the conclusion to the conflict between Garlemald and Eorzea, a war that raged since Final Fantasy XIV’s initial release in 2010.

But according to an interview with Naoki Yoshida in early 2021, this definitely isn’t the end for Final Fantasy XIV, which is reportedly already green-lit for two more expansions following Endwalker. Yoshida explained that “There are areas within planet Hydaelyn where we haven’t explored yet. There are continents that have yet to be discovered, areas that have yet to be explored. There’s possibilities there.”

What’s more, Yoshida explained that The Crystal Tower, a key plot point in both Shadowbringers and earlier ARR raids, facilitated travel to different realms and different times. Something that has already been hinted at in Endwalker. Time travel, forwards and back, could open up new expansions to explore any point in Final Fantasy XIV’s now impressive internal history.

So ultimately, there are no worries that Final Fantasy XIV will “end” with Endwalker. And with the game reaching new heights of popularity, it would be insane for Square Enix to stop supporting the game now. So instead, Final Fantasy XIV looks to have a long and healthy life-span.

Just look at Final Fantasy XI, Square Enix’s previous MMO in the franchise. That game has been active for 19 years, has received new story content as recently as 2021, and shows no signs of slowing down. With Final Fantasy XIV, a relatively young 11 years old, don’t be surprised to see it thrive for years to come.
