New players can also play the contents of the Starter Edition free of charge until they complete A Realm Reborn and Heavensward, so we recommend taking advantage of the free trial for Final Fantasy XIV before purchasing the game.

On top of the upfront purchase price for Final Fantasy XIV, players must pay a monthly fee to retain access to the online servers and continue playing. Each version of Final Fantasy XIV comes with 30 days of playtime, so users will have at least a month to sort out if they'd like to shell out some additional cash.
