Genshin Impact: Northlander Prototype Farming

How do you get these forging materials!?!?

Finding certain drops that you need can be extremely frustrating, and high-end forging materials are one of the most annoying to acquire. Sometimes the only way to obtain them is via farming, but sometimes you can get one more from completing a quest or an additional reward.

Northlander Prototype Farming

To get any of the Northlander Prototype forging materials, for a few, there are only two methods in the game, but for others, there are more options. The first is buying each weapon Prototype from the Souvenir Shops in Mondstadt and Liyue, but only one is available. The other method is by farming the World Bosses every week and hoping for the best.

The Northlander Prototypes are exceedingly rare that many players have openly expressed their discourse that the item is a myth, as the drop rate is that astonishingly low. Players have also said that the drop rate depends on the difficulty, that if you are on the lower World Levels, the Northlander Prototypes will never drop.

If you want the greatest chance of getting the Prototypes as a drop, you need the highest world level to make the World Boss the highest level. Any of the three World Bosses can drop the Northlander Prototype, Stormterror, Andrius, and the latest boss in update 1.1 Tartaglia.

Of course, you can buy a Northlander Sword Prototype from the Souvenir Shop in Mondstadt, the Northlander Bow, Claymore, Catalyst, and Polearm Prototype in the Souvenir Shop in Liyue. Though you can only buy one of each, you can no longer purchase another after you have purchased one.

  • Northlander Sword Prototype
    • Cost - 225 Anemo Sigils
  • Northlander Bow Prototype
    • Cost - 225 Geo Sigils
  • Northlander Claymore Prototype
    • Cost - 225 Geo Sigils
  • Northlander Catalyst Prototype
    • Cost - 225 Geo Sigils
  • Northlander Polearm Prototype
    • Cost - 225 Geo Sigils

Northlander Sword/Bow Prototype

If you are after more of the Northlander Bow and Sword Prototype, sadly, these two methods above are the only ones to get one at the moment. You have to spend every week fighting the World Boss at the highest level you can, and hope you can get the drop.

Northlander Catalyst Prototype

If you are after a Northlander Catalyst Prototype, then there is a way to get another one as a reward for completing the Adventurer Handbook Chapter 4. This is what you need to complete to get it:

  • Visit the Statue of The Seven at Stormterror's Lair
  • Upgrade the Statues of The Seven in Mondstadt to Lv. 6
  • Enhance 6 artifacts to Lv. 4
  • Collect 3 rewards from blossoms of wealth or blossoms of revelation
  • Complete an expedition
  • Ascend 3 characters to Phase 1
  • Enhance a weapon to Lv. 20
  • Craft something using alchemy
  • Hunt down an Electro Cicin Mage
  • Unlock a Shrine of Depths

Northlander Claymore Prototype

To get a Northlander Claymore Prototype, there is a quest that you can complete called Break the Sword Cemetary Seal, and by unlocking the Tri-Seals in the area around the Dadaupa Gorge. You can open up a Luxurious chest, and inside is a Northlander Claymore Prototype.

Northlander Polearm Prototype

To get a Northlander Polearm Prototype, you can get one as a reward from the Spiral Abyss Chamber Bounty, Floor 3, Chamber 3. As you complete the Spiral Abyss chambers for the first time, you receive what is called a Chambers Bounty, and a Northlander Polearm Prototype is a Chambers Bounty for completing Chamber 3 on Floor 3. Remember, you will only get a Prototype once.

Sadly apart from having the highest world level you can and hoping for the best, it is the only way to really get one. However, this might change in Genshin Impact 1.2 as there are three new weapons that are craftable in the Dragonspine region, and each of them requires you to have a Northlander Prototype forging material. More information and recipes can be found in our Genshin Impact 1.2 guide.

As these new weapons take Prototype parts, it may be likely that you'll eventually be able to buy these in shops, or they might increase the drop rate. However, the new weapons do take a new ore material only available on Dragonspine, Starsilver. More information on that will be given when we know more!
