5 Spells that should have been in Hogwarts Legacy

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has become the setting for multiple works outside of the original book series. Hogwarts Legacy is only one example. With such an expansive world to build on, this game had the opportunity to pull plenty of spells and magical items into its mechanics and stories. While there were a fair amount spells available to player character, we can think of a a few more that would have been a joy to wield. Here are some additional spells that should have been in Hogwarts Legacy.

5. Aguamenti

Since we were given two fire-making spells, Incendio and Confringo, it feels a bit odd that the water-making spell, Aguamenti, was left out. Sure, fire is an element more well known as a damage dealer, but canonically this charm could also do damage.

While Aguamenti is probably most recognizably used to try and fill a cup for a dehydrated Dumblerdore in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the spell can have a wide variety of effects depending on the intention of the caster. It can produce powerful jets of water from the caster's wand, or even waves of water.

This spell could have been used in-game in combination with Incendio or Confringo to deal extra damage. Or, other unique enemies that would need to be doused, maybe even dragons, would have been fun to fight in the game.

4. Repello

Frequently, in Hogwarts Legacy, we didn't want to be fighting. We'd rather wander around the beautiful Hogwarts setting that the developer's recreated. In the Highlands, sometimes even while flying on our brooms, we'd be spotted by enemies and locked into battle. The Repello charm could fix this problem.

Repello can be used generically or specifically to create a ward that sends enemies or other unwanted creatures running in other directions. This was likely the charm used to steer muggles away from the location of the Quidditch World Cup in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It was also used a bit more strategically by Professor Flitwick in the final battle at Hogwarts.

You probably wouldn't be able to use it during quests or specific dungeons, but it would be nice to have when exploring the open world. At the very least, we're sure those with arachnophobia would have appreciated a way to avoid as many spiders as possible.

3. Rictumsempra / Tarantallegra

After playing into the end game of Hogwarts Legacy, we think Unforgiveable Curses can quickly become overpowered by comparison to other spells. This makes sense, in a way, given the taboo and controversial nature of these spells. But the game almost punishes you for choosing not to learn them, taking away three spells that can break all shields and one that can instantly kill Trolls and other tanky enemies. No spell will match Avada Kedavra, but it would be nice to have some that function similarly to the Unforgivable Curses, without making your player character use Dark Magic.

Rictumsempra and Tarantallegra are two examples of spells that could become a substitute for Crucio. Where Crucio paralyses enemies with torturous pain, Rictumsempra (the tickling charm) could do something similar, by forcing enemies to halt with uncontrollable laughter. What might be more entertaining is Tarantallegra. This spell forces those that it is cast on to dance, instantly. Players would still be able to benefit from some control of the enemy, without feeling uneasy about torturing something.

2. Confundus / Obliviate

Similary to Crucio, Imperio could have an equivalent, kinder spell of sorts to be found in the canon. The Confundus Charm is a difficult spell to master in Harry Potter's canon, but, when it is, it can be used to trick or bewitch others. The effects of Confundus can range anywhere from causing a short reaction similar to "Jedi Mind Tricks", or have longer lasting effects.

While its use is a bit insidious in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, using Obliviate, the Memory-Erasing Charm, could also be an alternative to Darker Spells. This would give players the ability to wipe the mind of their enemies, making them forget who they are fighting and why.

We could understand limiting the ability of these spells by comparison to Imperio. Having access to a spell that could turn a Troll away from you and towards other enemies, even for a few attacks, would be welcome. These spells could provide alternatives to those who want to roleplay as a strictly good witch or wizard.

1. Expecto Patronum

Hogwarts Legacy wants to allow players to customize their wand, their Room of Requirement, and even their journey, albeit in a small way via the Hogwarts House they choose. What could enrich this further is the Patronus Charm. A conjuring spell that produces a protective ward taking the form of many different types of animals, depending on the witch or wizard who casts it.

Fans of the Harry Potter series will know that including this spell would almost require a certain enemy to also be present, Dementors. Though, Dementors aren't necessarily enemies, unless you've given the Ministry of Magic enough reason to send you to Azkaban. There are also Lethifolds in the Wizarding World, which are very similar. The main difference is that Lethifolds are categorized as magical beasts.

A Patronus can be produced at any time, whether an enemy is present or not. They don't even technically have to have an animal shape, as the caster needs to be well versed in the spell for this to occur. The Patronus Charm has also been used to send messages to other witches and wizards. Since the form a Patronus takes is unique to the caster, it can serve as a way to uniquely sign and verify messages. With so much utility, we would have loved to have seen this spell used as another customizable feature in Hogwarts Legacy.
