Marvel Puzzle Quest has been one of the hottest games on mobile for years and once I’d played it was easy to see why. You get to put together your favorite heroes from the Marvel universe into a team for some classic match-three battle action. But who are the best heroes in Marvel Puzzle Quest?

There are more than 250 heroes in Marvel Puzzle Quest, so we won’t be listing them all here! As with many gacha-style games, much of the early content is easy enough to get past with any team you like. Use this to hone your game style, looking for combos that work for you. 

Things start getting serious when you can start choosing between five-star heroes. Remember you’re looking for synergies, not just the top three heroes on the list. There’s a reason you can do well with low-tier combos such as Black Widow (stun) and Storm (AP boost) over poorly made teams. But when you get to the higher levels, you’ll need to step things up once more. I suggest looking out for some of these Marvel Puzzle Quest heroes.

SS-Tier heroes in Marvel Puzzle Quest

These heroes will slot into any team no matter what tactics you’re going for or the style of play you love. They’re versatile and powerful, and anyone you face off against is going to think twice about dueling you.

Apocalypse (Classic) 

I’m a sucker for a well-rounded hero and Apocalypse ticks all the boxes. He has three strong yet cheap abilities that offer defense and healing (while also putting out damage), protection-ignoring damage to the weakest opponent, and damage buff for his fellow heroes. It’s rare to find what feels like a utility hero that’s pretty near the top end of all the categories.  

Scarlet Witch (WandaVision)

What makes Scarlet Witch so strong is that her abilities work beautifully with literally any other heroes you want to throw into your team. Her Welcome to my Reality ability lets you choose a color and, if ever there aren’t 10 of it on the board, it’ll make some for you. She also has a strong passive defensive ability that builds your defense the more damage you take, making her a great and simple-to-use all-rounder.

S-Tier heroes in Marvel Puzzle Quest

These heroes will serve you right up to the end game in Marvel Puzzle Quest. They’re a small step down from the SS-Tier heroes either because they’re a little niche or not quite as well-rounded.

Okoye (Warrior General)

If you’re looking for a PVE tank, look no further than Okoye. She uses team-up tiles to increase her damage while her yellow ability adds a strong heal to the mix to keep her alive. Unfortunately in PVP Okoye can be countered relatively easily and will be targeted by any player that knows what they’re doing. 

Shang-Chi (Origin)

While some would put Shang-Chi in the top tier, I can’t put him up there due to his weakness in PVP. However, for PVE content there are few more fun heroes to play with. His combo point abilities power up on red and purple combos, but only while you keep doing them (up to 10 in a row). This allows you to unleash massive attacks when you pull it off. Sadly, as with Okoye above, his poor defense makes him an easy target. Luckily, the PVE AI isn’t quite so clever…

A-Tier heroes in Marvel Puzzle Quest

With the wealth of talent on offer, and needing the gacha-style system to luck out in your favor, you can’t always get what you want. These heroes will serve you well right through the game but do look to replace them if the opportunity arises. 

Crystal (Crystalia Amaquelin)

Crystal could be described as a slightly lower-grade Apocalypse, doing everything well but not quite as effectively. This makes Crystal an excellent foil to any other team members, as she’ll be chipping in with everything from heals to charges as well as sending out some solid smacks in the process. 

Onslaught (Psionic Entity)

Onslaught is a big-time damage dealer when placed in the right company, preferably with a hero such as Shang-Chi. Onslaught’s purple ability relies on setting traps, which can be undone a little too easily in PVP to be viable. However, paired with his green passive he can deal massive damage so is still a favorite in the PVE parts of Marvel Puzzle Quest.

The most important thing with Marvel Puzzle Quest is to have fun. If you love a particular hero, stick with them! It’s common to find combos that work well against the current meta, allowing you to take down popular team lineups with a clever combo.
