Marvel Snap update brings much-needed nerfs to Zabu and Silver Surfer

Trimming the cat's claws and the Surfer's... board?

The meta of Marvel Snap has recently featured two powerful archetypes in Zabu and Silver Surfer. Zabu alone has been one of the most-played cards in the game, making just about any and every archetype stronger, while Silver Surfer's most optimized lists were just behind Zabu in both play rate and power. However, a shadow update has brought previously-leaked nerfs to fruition, weakening both Zabu and Silver Surfer in the process.

What happened to Zabu and Silver Surfer?

The aforementioned leaks implied that both of these cards would receive some major overhauls, and that the nerfs would look like this:

  • Zabu goes from a three Cost to a two Cost, but now only discounts four Cost cards by one Energy instead of two.
  • Silver Surfer gains two Power but now only gives two Power to three Cost cards, down from three Power.

Right off the bat, it is easy to see that Silver Surfer decks just took a major hit to the total Power they can throw onto the board. In fact, this seemingly small one Power nerf to Silver Surfer's On Reveal will more than likely kill the archetype, as it will now struggle to make that final turn push for Power in two locations. Only time will tell, but this will most likely be the death of the archetype, at least in high rank play.

As for Zabu, the nerf he received is a tough one, but Second Dinner also made him more easily playable as a two Cost card. While this change will luckily get rid of the dreaded Spider-Man Absorbing Man combo, it remains to be seen how hard this nerf will hit Zabu's decks. At the very least, this will reduce the potency, as no longer will Zabu decks be able to throw down two four Cost cards on the fourth turn. This change should allow the meta to breathe a bit, bringing back archetypes killed by the Zabu-Surfer power creep into high rank gameplay.
