Latent Power, explained – Monster Hunter World

Hidden power, activated...

Latent Power is a unique skill in Monster Hunter World because, unlike most skills, it doesn't specifically state how to use it. If you're trying to decide whether or not to Latent Power in your build, here's everything you need to know about it.

How to use Latent Power in Monster Hunter World

You'll find the Latent Power skill on several different armor sets and pieces as you play through the game. It functions like any other available Skill, but in its description, it states that it is only active when certain conditions are met. When activated, Latent Power grants you a significant Affinity boost and a massive stamina depletion reduction to all actions. The obvious question then is what are these unspecified conditions to make use of these two insane buffs?

There are only two specific conditions that work independently of each other needed to activate Latent Power. You only need to fulfill one of them to receive the Latent Power buff, but both require a bit of sacrifice.

  • Wait Five Minutes - When you begin a Hunt, an internal countdown for Latent Power begins. As it is internal, you will never see this. Once five minutes have passed, Latent Power will activate. When the buff runs out, or you die, the timer resets, and Latent Power will activate again after another five minutes.

  • Take 180 Health Damage - This one kind of sucks because 180 damage is more than your total health unless you eat food and are using the Health Boost skill at max rank (200 Health is max). Even then, you're almost dead if you take this amount all at once, so I recommend staggering the damaged bit if you're planning to use this activation method constantly.

Normally, Latent Power only goes up to level 5, but there exists a level 6 and level 7 level of the skill if you're using the Zinogre Essence set bonus. At both level 6 and 7, the Health Damage requirement to activate the skill drops to 130, making it much easier to manually activate without throwing yourself to the wolves. Additionally, at level 7, Latent Power grants even more Affinity to you when activated.

I'm not a huge fan of this skill, but I can see the merit of building around it due to how potent the buffs are. So if you're planning to use Latent Power, you now understand everything you need to put the skill to work.
