All Rathalos Weaknesses

Elemental Weakness

The Rathalos' main weakness is dragon, so if you've got any weapons with this element, be sure to bring them along. Thunder and ice are excellent secondary options, as the damage dropoff for these element types aren't too drastic. Water should be your last resort, as they don't do much compared to the other elements. Do not use fire on the Rathalos.

When using elemental weapons, make sure to focus your attacks on the Rathalos' Head, Wings, and Tail, as these areas take the most damage.

Rathalos Location Weakness

If you are not wielding an elemental weapon, you want to attack places where you deal extra damage. These places on a monster differentiate depending on the weapon type you use—Cutting, Impact, or Shot.

  • If using a cutting weapon focus on the head, wings and tail.
  • If using a blunt weapon focus on the head.
  • If using a bow/shot weapon focus on shooting the head and the wings.

Rathalos Resistances and Ailments

Ailments aren't incredibly effective on Rathalos, but if you want to use them, Thunderblight is your best option here. All other ailments deal minuscule damage at best. Do not use Poison or Blast ailments on Rathalos, as the monster is immune to both of these.

Rathalos Drop Rates - Carves, Capturing & Breaking

Depending on your quest, you can get different rewards to forge armor and weapons, but each has a drop rate percentage, ultimately RNG. It is pure luck what you receive.

  • There are multiple ways of gaining items
    • You can carving three times once the monster is dead.
    • You can capture the monster instead of killing it.
      • Or carving the broken appendage of said monster.
    • From looting the drops from the monster
    • After successfully compleing your quest

Most monsters have breakable parts, and Rathalos is no different. You can break the Rathalos' Head, Back, Wings, and Tail with enough damage. If you break pieces off during the hunt, you will earn extra rewards after completing the quest.
