The character story choice is one of the more detail-orientated selections you'll make during character creation. This essentially determines who your character is and what their backstory was before arriving on the journey. These are the options you can choose from:

  • Academic - You're a scholar hoping to learn everything you can about the realms and pack as much knowledge into your head as you can.
  • Statesperson - You're on the higher side of society, born into wealth and enjoying finer things in life, like parties and dinners.
  • Tradesperson - You're a hard worker, trying to make a living for yourself through skilled labor in any way you can.
  • Vagrant - You're on the lowest branch of society in terms of wealth and stature, but you're willing to undergo anything to survive, begging, scourging, or persevering through a workhouse.
  • Hermit - You're an outsider to society and prefer it that way, but ingenious in your survival solutions, venturing into the wilderness and grateful for its resources.
  • Officer - You're a soldier who knows how to get through the thick and thin and endure any obstacle that comes at you, and have experience with all kinds of previous horrors.
  • Ne'er-Do-Well - You're a petty criminal who is willing to bend the rules to get by and almost always on the opposite side of the law.

Do character stories matter in Nightingale?

Character stories are perfect for an in-depth roleplay experience, allowing you to become someone entirely new and carve a path for them. However, choosing one in Nightingale will only slightly change your overall experience. They can affect your starting gear, specific interactions with NPCs, and base stats just minorly, but they will not change how your character is controlled or their skills.

What are Lineage and Inheritance in Nightingale?

The Lineage and Inheritance sections of the Nightingale character creation are all simply visual options. You can select a variety of base characters to fit into your family tree and then, in Inheritance, adjust your character's facial features based on the appearances of your parents and ancestors.

From there, you can begin getting into the knit and gritty of the character creation and changing each feature and detail to your liking. You don't have to end up looking anything like your ancestors if you don't want to.

One last major part of the Nightingale customization is deciding what difficulty you want to play on. Multiple options will change how you experience things by adjusting how tough creatures are, how many resources you come across, etc. You can change the overall difficulty and Realm Power to fine-tune your own playthrough. Here's how to make your selection:

  • Easy - For beginner survival players or people who want a more relaxing experience. You will find it easier to fight creatures, find more resources you need, and overall survivability.
  • Medium-Hard - There isn't too much difference between medium and hard. This is for players who have experience with survival games and want a well-balanced play-through where creatures will get progressively more challenging as you progress.
  • Extreme - This is for seasoned survival players who know how to deal with tough threats, survive on limited materials, and are looking for the most challenging experience that they can get.

All these choices will allow you to craft the game experience you want to enjoy in Nightingale, as well as create a character that is unique and true to you. Since you can create multiple characters, you can change things up and try new paths as well!
