Freighters in No Man's Sky are colossal starships that can carry out interstellar travel, while also acting as a portable base for the player. Players can store tons of items in craftable storage units within these Freighters, and recruit a squadron of frigates to assist in battle and expeditions. Owing to their practicality, you will find yourself wanting to summon it to whichever planet you find yourself in. However, summoning your Freighter to your location involves installing and upgrading the Hyperdrive module, as well as being aware of the type of star system you are currently in. In this guide, we'll talk about how you can find your Freighter in No Man's Sky.
How to summon your Freighter in No Man's Sky
In order to summon your Freighter to your location, simply pull up the Quick Menu by pressing Down on the D-Pad (Controllers) or X button (PC). From there, scroll through the menu until you see the Freighter option. Summoning your Freighter does not require any fuel. However, an important thing to keep in mind is the type of star system you are currently in. If your Freighter does not have any Freighter Hyperdrive upgrades installed, you can only summon it to Yellow Star systems. Therefore, if you are unable to summon your Freighter to your location, and do not have any Freighter Hyperdrive upgrades installed, consider travelling to a Yellow Star System to summon it.
How to upgrade your Freighter Hyperdrive
There are four Star Systems, each indicated by the colors Yellow, Red, Blue, and Green. While you can warp or summon your Freighter to any Yellow Star System, it requires a few Freighter Hyperdrive upgrades to warp to Red, Blue and Green Star Systems. In order to upgrade the Hyperdrive in your Freighter, you need to purchase Craftable Upgrade Blueprints from the Capital Ship Research terminal onboard your Freighter. Each Blueprint will require a certain number of Salvaged Frigate Modules to unlock. The Freighter Hyperdrive upgrade progression are as follows:
- Warp Core Resonator: +200 light years to Freighter warp distance
- Plasmatic Warp Injector: +300 light years to Freighter warp distance
- Reality De-threader: +800 light years to Freighter warp distance
- Amplified Warp Shielding: Allows warping to Red Star Systems
- Chromatic Warp Shielding: Allows warping to Green Star Systems
- Temporal Warp Computer: Allows warping to Blue Star Systems

How to get a Freighter in No Man's Sky
Freighters are immensely expensive commodities in No Man's Sky. Fortunately, however, players can pick up a Freighter for free early on in the game. In order to do so, players must first complete five warp drives to trigger a Space Battle. Upon completion of the fifth warp drive, the player will receive an emergency broadcast from the captain of a nearby Freighter which is under attack by pirates. Should the player accept the captain's request for help, they must fend off enemy pirate ships which will try to attack the Freighter.
Once you have successfully defeated the pirate ships, the captain of the freighter will invite you onboard the Freighter. Simply dock your Starship inside the Freighter, and walk up to the captain on the bridge. Out of pure relief and joy, they will generously hand over the Freighter to you for no cost, should you choose to accept the offer. These Space Battles will trigger after every five warp drives. If you already have a Freighter in your collection, the captain will instead offer to trade their Freighter with yours. Upon purchasing a new Freighter, your existing Freighter base layout will automatically get transferred to your new Freighter.
