What do the names Koraidon and Miraidon mean? – Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

There's got to be some lore behind their names, right?

The Pokémon developers don’t make legendary names without some sort of meaning—much like Dialga’s (clock) “dial” pun for its time-related powers and design. Koraidon and Miraidon from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are no different. Here is the meaning hidden behind their names.

What does Korai mean in Pokémon Scarlet?

Despite Pokémon Scarlet taking place in a Spain-inspired land, Koraidon’s name is very non-Spanish in origin. It is actually derived from the word korai, which means ancient or past. In fact, korai in Kanji (古来) has a character that could also mean “old” (古). Based on the very archaic clothing and accessory design of Sada, Pokémon Scarlet’s regional professor, Koraidon is a Pokémon that reflects a time where ancient civilizations roamed the land. The tattoos on its body even resemble that of ancient cave paintings, and its horns resemble bones.

What does Mirai mean in Pokémon Violet?

In contrast, Miraidon is a Pokémon that perfectly represents mirai, which means future in Japanese. Miraidon is a Pokémon that’s downright luminescent—and one that supports a machine-like face and metallic claws. If you look at its design from afar, it also looks like something similar to electricity is running through its body. It even uses jetpacks to fly! Turo, Pokémon Violet’s regional professor, also has very futuristic outfit to reflect the motif of the legendary Pokémon it stands with.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the ninth region in the mainline Pokémon games (tenth if we’re counting Pokémon Legends: Arceus). It’s an open-world game set in an area that’s heavily based on Spain, with Pokémon designs like Lechonk and Sprigatito that are also inspired by the region. Depending on the game you purchase, you start your journey from a different school and regional professor.
