While Aesfrost may one of the strongest military forces in the land, not every soldier residing in Norzelia's northern nation agrees with the Archduke's decision to ignite another war. Many citizens still recall the dire consequences of the Saltiron war from 30 years ago, and have no desire to witness another cycle of bloodshed and destruction. One man in particular has defected from Aesfrost's army as a result, now leading a life dedicated to protecting the weak—ex-leader of the Blackirons, Flanagan Grutte. Here's how to recruit Flanagan Grutte in Triangle Strategy.
Where to find and recruit Flanagan Grutte
Flanagan's character story can appear on the world map at any point after character stories are unlocked in Chapter V: Encroaching Darkness, though he won't approach House Wolffort until Serenoa's convictions are strong enough to align with his. If Flanagan's story doesn't seem to be appearing for you, don't worry—just work on strengthening Serenoa's convictions by participating in mock battles or the main story's events, and this Aesfrosti soldier will be visiting the encampment in no time.

Once his character story has shown up, watch the story's cutscene to meet Flanagan Grutte and learn of his history as the former leader to Aesfrost's elite solder unit, the Blackirons, earning him the nickname Bloody Shield. Flanagan has become disillusioned with war in the days since, however, and now wishes to forget his old moniker and put an end to further bloodshed. Serenoa invites Flanagan to the ranks of House Wolffort upon learning of his resolve, unlocking him as a playable character.
Flanagan Grutte's abilities
As former commander of the Aesfrosti elite Blackiron soldiers, Flanagan uses his extensive combat knowledge and experience to aid House Wolffort in battle. His initial weapon is the Rook Shield, which he uses to crush enemies while protecting his comrades. When using Aerial Assault, Flanagan will ride his hawk to a selected space before crashing down, dealing physical damage to all opponents within range.
Shielding Stance allows Flanagan to absorb 50 percent of the damage taken by an ally for two turns, though he must be within three spaces of the selected ally for this effect to remain in place. Flanagan has quite a bit of mobility and durability, making him a great choice for filling the role of a tank on any team. If you're looking for a unit that's a cross between Hughette and Erador, be sure to recruit Flanagan Grutte!
