When I first started out in this game, I was a bit confused on finding these two important resources. They are needed for creating glass and getting you the all-important Smelter.

Finding Sand and Clay in Raft

If you're looking for Sand and Clay then you will pretty much only find it in the reef areas around islands. You will need either a Plastic or Scrap Hook to harvest it. Look for beige rock looking objects near the reefs surrounding the island. They can kind of blend in with the general seafloor, so keep your eyes out for them. You'll know you've found one when you hover over it with your hook and an icon of the hook shows up. Here's what they look like in-game:

The Clay objects are a bit darker than the Sand, but they do end up looking a lot alike. So, just try to mine whichever ones you see that look slightly out of place.

Now, when you head into the water, you are going to have to be very careful to avoid your good friend the shark. You have a few options on how to deal with this. One of them is to just dive in the water mine a bit and go back to land. You can usually avoid the shark enough to get what you need done, but this can be an annoying process. Another option for you is to throw out some Shark Bait. This requires 2x Rope and 2x Raw Herring or Pomfret to create. You can catch the fish with a Fishing Rod. Throw this in the water and it will keep the shark occupied for over a minute or so! The final option is to kill the shark. If you stab it enough it will eventually die. You will get some delicious Raw Shark Meat for your troubles. The shark will return eventually, but you will get some peace and quiet for a few minutes.

Another issue you might run into is stopping your raft. This can be accomplished a couple of different ways early on. You can just run your raft into the island and it should stop your progress. Once you're ready to leave, you can use a Paddle to move away from the island and start on your adventure again. The other way to go is to create a Throwable Anchor. All you need is 2x Plank, 4x Rope, and 4x Stone to create it. Place it on the side of your boat and then heave it into the water. You can now exit your craft without worrying about it floating away. Once you're ready to go again, you can remove it and it will be gone forever. The Throwable Anchor can only be used once!

What Can I Make With Sand and Clay?

Sand and Clay are both required to make a Wet Brick. You will need to these to create a Smelter, which is an important tool you'll need to create more advanced materials. Once you create a Wet Brick, you need to place it somewhere on your raft to dry out. Clay can also be used to create Clay Bowls which are used for collecting dishes from the Cooking Pot! Once you have your Smelter, you can throw some Sand into it to create Glass which is used to create an Advanced Purifier or Binoculars.
