Among the new characters available to unlock in Risk of Rain 2's new Seekers of the Storm DLC, the Chef makes its grand return and stands ready with sharpened meat cleavers. If you're wondering how to add this character to your roster, here's our handy guide for how to unlock Chef in Risk of Rain 2.
Risk of Rain 2 has added three new characters to its already impressive roster, and one of them just so happens to be Chef, one of the most beloved characters in the series.
How to unlock and play as Chef in Risk of Rain 2
In order to unlock Chef in Risk of Rain 2, you'll need to collect three specific item drops first. These include the Cautious Slug (Common), the Bison Steak (Common), and an Infusion (Uncommon). While you do this, we recommend equipping the Artifact of Command to make getting those items substantially easier.
As a reminder, the Artifact of Command turns all items into Command Essences, allowing you to manually select a specific item you've previously unlocked rather than it being a randomized drop.
Also, bear in mind that your progress towards unlocking Chef will carry over multiple runs if needed, if you're having difficulty getting all three items to drop in succession.
Once you have those three items, while on Stage One you need to find and activate a Halcyon Shrine. If the generated stage that you're on doesn't have one, restart the stage until one appears. Once you activate the shrine, you'll need to "feed" it gold (a minimum of 200 pieces) while killing enemies in the vicinity of it.
When the shrine receives enough gold, a special mini-boss will spawn that you need to kill. Once you do, a green portal has a chance to appear for you to jump through. If it doesn't, you'll need to repeat the process until it spawns.
This portal will take you to a unique stage called the Reformed Altar. Run across it until you see a giant staircase that leads up to a platform with pillars. Head left of that staircase towards a cave opening nearby. Go inside and you'll see a small altar area with a wok pot and beneath it a display where you can place the three previously mentioned items. You can also see Chef cooking in the background.
Once done, those items will go into the wok pot and Chef will then permanently unlock for your game going forward. You'll also unlock the 'Order Up!' achievement. To play as Chef, simply start a new run and select them from the character menu.
Chef's moveset is considered among the most effective and reliable of all playable characters, and it includes:
- Chef's Kiss (Passive) - Killing enemies with 2 or more skills cooks them up and drops a healing food item.
- Dice (Primary) - Throw a cleaver through enemies for 250% damage. Use again to recall the cleaver, dealing 375% damage on the return trip.
- Sear (Secondary) - Scorch nearby enemies for 600% damage. Inflicts Burn on targets. Glazed enemies take +75% damage.
- Roll (Utility) - Charge the rolling pin to speed forward, dealing 500-800% damage and Stunning any enemies hit.
- Glaze (Special) - Fire globs of oil in quick succession, dealing 7x200 damage, Slowing and Weakening enemies.
- Yes, Chef! (Special) - Boosts Chef's regular abilities to make them stronger and changes properties of the attacks.
