Revenge of the Morningstar is the eighth installment of the main Tall Tale questline for Sea of Thieves. In this guide, we will cover the entirety of this Tall Tale, starting with the first part of the quest — finding the Morningstar Chest! In this Tall Tale, we deal with deception, cowardice, malice, and bravery.
Sea of Thieves | Revenge of the Morningstar Tall Tale | How to Find the Morningstar Chest
The Morningstar chest is the first item we find on this adventure. It contains the most crucial item to move forward: Morningstar Clothing! To trick some NPCs into believing you're part of the famous Morningstar Crew, you have to don their garb. However, before we begin looking for the Chest, we have a few important pieces of information.

HIDDEN JOURNAL LOCATIONS: When you start this adventure, you might notice in your Pirate Log that one of the Commendations associated with it is for finding all the Hidden Journals. You must have the Revenge of the Morningstar Tall Tale active to find these Journals! As such, it is best to look for them along the way as you visit the islands in your iteration of the Tall Tale. Follow the link above to get the guide to locating these Hidden Journals.
If you're still ready, then you're likely certain you're looking for the Morningstar Chest. The plus side to this part of the story is that you'll always be headed to one place! The downside (if you can call it one) is that you'll be forced to change your outfit. So, if you've got a fancy and prestigious customized outfit equipped, you're going to have to forego it to trick the NPCs in to tell you the locations you need.
Step One: Starting Revenge of the Morningstar
The whole premise of this story is that you are taking revenge upon Captain Graymarrow, who hunted down and hid the souls of the Morningstar Crew. Finding how to start this quest is inherently provided through the Sea of Thieves grapevine. In your Pirate Log, it will tell you that to start this Tall Tale, you'll need to speak to Sandra the Shipwright on Dagger Tooth Outpost.
In case you've forgotten, the Shipwrights of the Outposts are the only place to customize your ship and deck it with different skins for each of the components. You can find the location of Sandra the Shipwright in the image above.
Once you've started the quest, you can choose whether or not to listen to Sandra and follow along with the story. Regardless of what you do, you'll find that your first location in the quest is half a map away on Boulder Cay. Set your sails and hoist your anchor; it's time to avenge the Morningstar!
Step Two: Finding the Crew's Logs
Luckily, this part of the adventure is rather straightforward. In your Quest Book, you'll see it mentioned that each crewmember's logs are amongst the wreckage of their ship on Boulder Cay. When you reach the island, park near the Southeast corner and dive into the depths below.
It might take you a bit of exploring, but you'll come across a shipwreck on the ocean floor. From here, you must find the logs of the three crewmembers that wrote them. If you are having trouble finding them, you can use the images below to help you locate them.
As you can see, the scrolls are placed throughout the shipwreck. You should find one of the scrolls on the back half and two on the front half. Once you find these, you will be able to determine the location of the Morningstar Chest on the island itself. However, if you still need help, you can read Step Three to see where to dig.
Step Three: Digging up the Morningstar Chest
In the Morningstar Crew's logs, you will find they describe the Chest's precise location on the island. It is on the Southwest beach, directly between a medium-sized rock and a bent palm tree. When you dig there, you will uncover the the Chest and have access to the components inside. No searching for keys on this Tall Tale!
Step Four: Head to Sanctuary Outpost
Once you have found the logs and the Chest, you will have additional pages in your Quest Book that hint where you need to go next:Â Sanctuary Outpost. This is a short sail South by Southwest and is the home of Tracy and Tyler, who are two NPCs you need to speak to if you'd like to get the Skull and Chalice. Along the way, you need to put on all the available Morningstar Uniforms (you must choose between the dress and the jacket). You must be wearing the complete outfit (including the hat and gloves) before speaking to Tracy and Tyler. Otherwise, they won't give you the information you need.
When you make it to Sanctuary Outpost, you will find Tracy behind the bar of the Tavern. She will give you the additional information that tells you where the Skeleton Captains guarding Graymarrow's Skull will be located. This is always the same location. You'll find this Skeleton Captain on Cannon Cove, which is another short trip away, Southeast of Sanctuary Outpost. She will instruct you to talk to Tyler.

Tyler sells tools on Sanctuary Outpost. After you're finished talking to Tracy, you can walk across the central part of the island to Tyler and speak to him about the Skeleton Captain's location guarding the Chalice. Similar to Tracy, he will always tell you it's at one location: Sinking Grove. If you look at the map, you'll be able to easily determine that by this, he means Sunken Grove.
What's Next
Now that you've spoken to them and know where you're headed, you're ready to sail to the designated islands and find the next items. You can find those in the next parts of the guide, which explain Graymarrow's Orders on Cannon Cove and Sunken Grove.
